Hello everyone.Hope you are doing well and having a wonderful weekend. This has been scheduled ahead of time, so hoping it posts on time. I have been in Virginia the last week again as my mom is now under hospice care. Perhaps the greatest gift we can give my mom is her being in the comfort of her home surrounded by the love of my father, my sister and myself.
There is no where else I could possibly be right now and as utterly devastating as this journey is, I do not want to see my mother suffer any longer. Alzheimer’s is the cruelest disease I have ever seen and to anyone who has been touched by it in any way, understands this. Alzheimer’s previous to this was just another health term, but meant little to me. To have our family ravaged by it, has been profoundly life changing. It is beyond anything I can possibly explain but this level of pain and grief I did not know was possible.
I feel so lucky to have hit the family jackpot for the parents I have. They gave me the love and nurturing that I needed to grow and have passed those qualities down to my own boys. So much of my mother is in me. As my mothers hands were the first I held when I came to life, I want my hands to return the favor as she leaves us. Excruciatingly difficult but I would have it no other way.
Sorry for the sad opening, just a slice of my life lately. I do not know what the next few weeks hold, so we take it day by day for now. I have some blog posts planned ahead of time but if you see the blogging slowing down for a bit, you will know why. Though truthfully the blogging aspect is very cathartic for me, so work on it in windows of time. I wanted to share what is happening, as many of you have written me since my Instagram post, the outpouring of love and support has been beyond anything I could have imagined.
Onward to happier subjects, this post……

1 A TOUCH OF FALL I think you might be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t love a just out of the oven warm apple pie. Made these a few years ago and was hoping to do them again this fall. I may try to make them for my dad as apple pie is the ultimate comfort food. I took these small ramekins, cut up 6 apples into wedges, 2 pats of butter, brown sugar and about 1/2 cup of oats. Took ready made pie crust and lined the ramekin then used these darling leave cutouts from Sur La Table to create these adorable leaf mini pies.
2 A DELICIOUS AND EASY TOMATO SOUP Yes, food subjects two in a row because it’s fall and its the comfort food season of eating! Lately, in the small windows of time I have been home, I have taken comfort in comfort foods one of them being an old fashioned pot of tomato and basil soup. I added my favorite sandwich, fresh mozzarella, tomato, basil on a lightly toasted sour dough bread. This simple but satisfying meal made many a rough day just a little better, and definitely tastier.
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Toss together the tomatoes, 1/4 cup olive oil, salt, and pepper. Spread the tomatoes in 1 layer on a baking sheet and roast for 45 minutes.
In an 8-quart stockpot over medium heat, saute the onions and garlic with 2 tablespoons of olive oil, the butter, and red pepper flakes for 10 minutes, until the onions start to brown. Add the canned tomatoes, basil, thyme, and chicken stock. Add the oven-roasted tomatoes, including the liquid on the baking sheet. Bring to a boil and simmer uncovered for 40 minutes. Pass through a food mill fitted with the coarsest blade. Taste for seasonings. Serve hot or cold.
3 INSTAGRAMS OF INTEREST So many beautiful and inspiring pictures to love this weekend. Despite going through such a hard time, seeking the beauty is very important and healing for me….
4 A WONDERFUL HOUSE TOUR I am a fan of Mark Sike’s elegant and timeless style. Own all of his books and seem to always be drawn to his interiors which embody classic design with a more modern, updated touch. This is a fun tour of his elegant and welcoming home.
5 OUR FALL LOVE CONTEST IS NOW OPEN FOR YOUR ENTRIES! I announced on Thursday that we are now taking your entries for our Fall Love contest. We are already more than half way full so don’t wait too long! This is such a fun contest and any picture of yours is eligible as long as it’s fall related, is clear and at least 400 x 600 1-2 entries per person. Send your pictures to info@enchantedhome.com
6 A LITTLE HUMOR TO ADD SOME LIGHT AND LEVITY I love humor, am a prankster and always appreciate a cute or funny joke. So thought you may enjoy this round….
7 SUNDAY’S SURVEY Have you had a family member or loved one affected by Alzheimer’s? I put up an Instagram post to explain that I would not be on for a bit and was astounded at the feedback, comments and almost too many direct messages to answer.
While it makes me feel somewhat comforted to know that I am not in this alone, it is also devastating to know just how this has ravaged so many families. Having been touched by it in the most profound way, I am going to donate 15% of all sales this weekend to the Alzehimer’s Organization to help fund their ongoing research and will continue to look ways to support this mission. Curious if you have had relatives/good friends who have had/have Alzheimer’s?

In honor of my beautiful mom and her continued valiant fight against Alzheimer’s, we are offering 20% off site wide and donating 15% of the proceeds to the Alzheimer’s Organization.
And that is a wrap. Hope you enjoyed this Sunday post. Always appreciate you stopping by. Wishing you a wonderful weekend, hug those you love extra tight, until next time….
My mom began Alzheimer disease at 55. and lived until just shy of 85. Horrible disease. Miss her greatly but would never want her to suffer another day.
Sending you and your family lots of Love and Prayers and Gods blessings to you all..Much love and friendship to you all at this difficult time for all of you..Such a cruel disease…
I honor your plan to stay in your sweet mother’s presence during this most difficult time. My heart breaks – as I’ve seen this Alzheimer disease up close and very personal with my own sister – and her’s was Early Onset. So very devastating – and I’ve even said before – that I wished her diagnosis had been the terrible “C” word – as I felt that at least we had a chance of being cured from it 🙁 Blessings & Prayers to your entire Family.
My husbands brother just suddenly became forgetful more and more. Got tested and found he had what they termed rapid onset Alzheimer’s. This was a shock to all. His doctor said they are seeing more and more of this in those who had Covid. We assume this would have happened at some point but he’s only 71 and otherwise in good health. Has truly taken the family by shock.
God Bless you in your journey with your mom. I lost both my parents a few years ago and it’s a huge hole in our hearts but we never want to see them suffer. Hugs and blessings to you and your family.
My dear husband has dementia that is progressing. Doctors say there is not much difference in the two diseases. Same outcome. Breaks my heart . You didn’t mention a spouse.
I am very sorry to read about your mother but know it must be a comfort to her to have you and your family there with her. It is such a cruel disease and especially difficult to see a parent or family member suffer from it. Prayers are sent your way to give you strength during this challenging time.
Tina, I know how difficult this is for you, My mom died from Alzheimers painfully to watch. My mom went from the hardest working person, limitless energy to not remembering her children and at the very end not being able to communicate at all. So painful to watch.
Covid and flu both linked to Alzheimers. Everyone get all your shots for both. I believe it’s due to the inflammation to the brain.
I lost my beautiful momma to this horrendous disease last year. And my heart is totally with you as you experience the same. She watched me take my first breath and I watched her take her last. She is still my hero. Please know there are many prayers and loving thoughts for you and your family.
Tina, my grandmother had Alzheimer’s and there are no words that describe the descent. It is so terrifying for them and unbelievable grief for the loved ones. I read The 36 Hour Day a few times and found some comfort as it normalized my experience. Please don’t worry about the blog. If it helps you to post, then do so. If it is a burden right now, then DON’T do it. Everyone here cares for you and understands if we don’t here from you for some time. You and your family are on my prayers. I am praying for comfort for your mom. Please take care of yourself in the best way you can, whatever that may look like.
My heart is with you, Tina. Just the hardest, saddest journey to express and you’ve spoken so aptly..
Please know you are loved far & wide and in my prayers along with throngs
Of others too🙏💙🙏
hi Tina first I want to say that both of your recipes featured today look delicious.
I am so so sorry to hear about what you’re going through. We went through it with my mom almost 3 years ago and you’re right the pain is excruciating and at times seems almost impossible to accept that something could be so cruel.
Hospice is a wonderful organization that not only is a great support for the family but helps your mom to transition from life to being by God’s side. I promise you one thing, you will feel her presence and her spirit through little things that you do, say and experience. you will feel her with you even once she is physically no longer here.
We are all here from you, I send you my prayers and best wishes
My prayers are with you on this most difficult journey. My Mother has dealt with Alzheimer disease for the last 8 years. It is hard to witness their physical decline and mental void. You miss them before they are even gone. Wishing you God’s peace and comfort and for your Mom, a peaceful passing.
I will keep you and your family in my prayers. There is absolutely nothing more you can do than give your parents your time, our most precious gift. When one has wonderful parents, their absence is profound and the grief often unbearable, but everything you are doing will come to be a cherished memory for you. I miss my wonderful parents daily, and spent their last years by their side through horrible illness, but I was so very glad I did. Take care of yourself when you can, and rest when you can.
I send you all a big hug. Alzheimer’s is such a devastating disease, not just for the patient but for the caregiver, too. My mother-in-law had Alzheimer’s, and I took care of her for three years until she died. Then five years ago, I suddenly realized my 65 year old husband had it, too. But you do what you have to do.
This year, I’ve been working on the house to make it safer for him and easier for me to care for him as he continues to decline. I try to anticipate what we’ll need ahead. of time because it’s less stressful that way. My next project is to buy a top notch hospital bed that can turn my husband automatically and protect his skin. I’ll store the bed in the garage until it’s needed. Then when the time comes, my handyman can move the hospital bed into the spare bedroom. That’s the plan.
Dear Tina, Sending you and your precious Mom and all of your family my prayers. My Mom was diagnosed a year ago, and as you say, there are no words to describe the profound sadness. May the Lord bless you, strengthen you, and comfort your mind and body.
Having known you from your 1st blogging “event”…You have such a WONDERFUL heart, & your thoughts are so VERY sweet…My heart literally hurts for you & for your family…My 1st year in college (1975) also began my 1st experience with this illness which consumed (for +/-6 years) my uncle who had always been like a father to me…During 2005, I again became “acquainted” with this type illness via Lewy Body which consumed (for +/-15 years) my 1st cousin who had always been like an older brother to me…During 2018, this illness consumed (+/-3 years) my mother-in-law who had been like a mother to me since I was a very young child…Clinging to The Holy Bible (Lean not unto thine own understanding/etc.), knowing that they are all now at peace, & the hymn, “The Soul Never Dies”, have helped me to survive these occurrences as well as many other occurrences…Perhaps, they can also help you & others survive whatever life brings into our paths…Many Blessings to You & Others…
Tina, I am so sorry that you and your family are going through this. Thank goodness for Hospice and the nurses and volunteers who help to make it possible. I volunteer at a wonderful Rummage Sale held in Far Hills, NJ. All proceeds go to making Hospice care possible for many families and support the Adult Day Care facility so that those who care for loved ones with memory/Alz challenges can attend to appointments/errands and know that their family member is safe & sound. The donations of items from the community are truly amazing (some even end up at auction).
Would love for you to attend a sale, always lots of vintage blue & white Asian pottery.
Keeping you and yours in my thoughts & prayers.
Hi there. Please don’t publish this. It’s just for you. I’m so sorry to hear yet another person and their loved ones are affected by Alzheimers. You all are in my prayers. I hope God is merciful with your family. On a softer note, I won a contest you held in the Spring of 2019. I got pinged in many comments because the silverware settings were on the wrong side. My mother helped me do that table. I knew it was not set correctly, but it was my little nod to her and my little tribute to memory loss. My mother set thousands of tables in her day, correctly. This was the last one she set. (& I won?) Yes I won. Just wanted to share. Godspeed to your mother. ..from another Virginian.
Tina, I am so sorry for your pain. Prayers for you and your family during this difficult time. My Dad had vascular dementia which is similar to Alzheimers. We kept him at home and I will always be grateful that we were able to do that.
Yes, this is a cruel disease. My grandmother, aunt and husband’s brother passed with this disease. I have a cousin now with this disease. We kept husband’s brother in our home and cared for him for 4 years. Love and nurture them to the end. Prayers and hugs from my heart.
My husband of 51 years died of Alzheimer’s Disease 1 year 9 months ago after a 13 year battle. I too had him at home with me and I’m so appreciative that we could do that. I’m certain that he was much, much happier in his own home. I consider it an honor to have cared for the love of my life. You will never regret your decision to keep your mother at home and to spend as much time with her as you can. My heart and prayers go out to you, your father and sister, and to your whole family. God bless each of you.
My mom has dementia and is currently in memory care. I feel as though we lost her a long time ago even though her body is still here. It is an awful disease that robs my mom of who she is and drains me while having to watch it.
Sending Hugs and Prayers.
Prayers for your mother, you, your father, and your family. Five years ago, Hospice staff was a blessing to my dad in end of life care, and helped myself, my mom, and my family as we cared for him at home. Our faith in God brought us hope and peace. 🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️✝️
My husband has Alzheimer’s and end of life kidney disease. He’s 84 and has it Alzheimer’s over 12 years. We just now had to place him in a nursing facility. It broke our hearts. He will not be with us much longer. Prayers and thoughts to everyone experiencing such pain.
