**Always add some pretty pictures to break up the post plus a final picture of what I think a nearly perfect hotel room would look like**
Good morning friends, hope you are doing well. For today’s Let’s Talk, we’re talking about hotels and my somewhat germ-phobic, slightly OCD tendencies when I travel. I have a feeling I’m not alone here, and I’m genuinely curious to see how many of you can relate. I absolutely love to travel, and that desire has never waned. But what has changed over the years is how much my admitted “quirks” have somewhat intensified — especially when it comes to hotel rooms. Even the nicest hotels can sometimes let me down but many have impressed me as well. If I could design my own hotel room, oh, I’d have so many opinions.
Let’s start with what makes up the perfect hotel room in my (admittedly picky) mind.
Carpeting —This is my nemesis in hotel rooms. Carpeting is my first anxiety trigger. I never know when it was last cleaned or what’s lurking in it. When my kids were little, I used to make a towel trail from their beds to the bathroom so their feet never touched the carpet. To this day, I still put two towels by my bedside and always wear slippers at all times.
Bedding Matters-Down pillows are non-negotiable. I cannot stand lumpy, synthetic pillows — they ruin my sleep and give me a neck ache. I also prefer a firmer mattress; soft, sink-in ones make me feel trapped. If the bed isn’t made with crisp, tight corners, I immediately feel uneasy. And comforters? I usually ask that they be removed before I arrive. I’ll either sleep with just clean sheets or bring my own small blanket. No printed or dark comforters for me. In a perfect world, there would be a light down comforter still wrapped from the dry cleaners on the bed when I arrive.
Pillow Quirk (this is the part you may think I have lost it or I may give you something to think about next time you are in a hotel room) You know how pillowcases have that open side where the fabric is tucked in? I can’t stand sleeping on that side — my brain tells me there could be germs or, heaven forbid, spiders hiding inside. I always face that side away from me toward the wall. I even bring my own pillow — a beloved down one that’s been everywhere with me and folds into a ball.
Room service/good- OK I just know this is going to be controversial and not all will agree, again, this is just my opinion. I have a thing about food in hotel rooms. The idea of room service does not appeal to me at all. I have tried it a few times and never felt comfortable. There’s that awkward minute or when they bring the food in and you are just standing there. I don’t like the idea of food (and crumbs) in the room. I would never be able to eat a meal in my bed. Ever. I also cannot stand the way the scent of the food lingers in the room. Then there’s the table or tray of what’s left, having to leave it outside or have another awkward moment for them to come in and collect it. Just not my thing.
Light vs. Dark Rooms A dark hotel room immediately makes me anxious. Recently, I stayed at a lovely hotel, but everything was chocolate brown — carpet, bedding, walls — and I just couldn’t relax. A light, airy, crisp white room feels infinitely cleaner and calmer, even if it technically isn’t.
The Germ Hotspots- A HUGE pet peeve of mine is the overflow holes in the bathroom sinks- YUCK! They are a breeding ground for germs and I always think a bug or spider could come walking out of them. PLEASE sinks with no overflow holes! I was thrilled to learn that newer sinks are being made without them!I’m reluctant to touch the phone or remote (hello, sanitizing wipes!), and I would never make coffee in a hotel room.
Don’t even get me started on shower curtains — give me glass doors only, please. I always have s small can of lysol and disinfectant wipes. I find often hotel room chairs and sofas to potentially be hotpots for germs as those rarely get professional cleaned (most hotels).
My Dream Hotel Room!
If I could design one myself, here’s what it would have:
Tile that looks like wood instead of carpeting, with a low-pile rug that could easily be cleaned or replaced often and easily!
All white and cream tones for a fresh, airy feel.
A simple sanitizing station for the remote and phone.
Down pillows and sealed, freshly cleaned comforters opened only by the guest.
A small refrigerator, bottles of water, essentials and maybe a mini ice maker.
Glass shower doors, no sink holes, and a towel warmer (heaven!)
Bath mats sealed in their own dry-cleaned packaging.
Good lighting — layered lamps, sconces, and a few recessed lights.
And of course, a full-length mirror (it amazes me how many luxury hotels skip that!).
So there you have it — my ultimate hotel room fantasy and a list of all the little things that make me squirm. Some might sound extreme, but I have a feeling a few of you are nodding along (maybe?)
I used AI to somewhat create what to me, would be an inviting, clean and crisp feeling hotel room. The kind of room I would walk to and feel relaxed and happy to be in. OK, the fireplace is a bit extreme I know but looks cozy! The fact that everything is light makes the cleanliness end of things feel more accountable. Prints and dark colors can hide more (in my opinion) AI does wacky things sometimes (like the odd fixture on left with 3 shades) but gives you the idea!
Now it’s your turn — tell me, what are your hotel quirks? This, I want to hear, and hopefully it won’t be yet another thing to add to my list:) Do you have your own travel rituals or must-haves to make a room feel clean and comfortable? I can’t wait to hear and don’t judge, I know some of these might seem crazy but its honest! OK….now your turn to weigh in. Thanks for stopping in, until next time…..
Last day to enjoy extra savings on our new holiday ring (and a few fun non holiday ring) collection!
Wow Tina everything you said was right up my alley!!
I always bring my own pillow. I spray everything down with my can of Lysol and then I don’t have housekeeping come for my entire visit.
I made an exception last March at the beautiful St Regis in Dubai because I had fallen and hurt my wrist. I saw the housekeeper do the bed and it was shocking to me. The sheets and comforter were not changed and then she sprayed everything with something (?) and proceeded to use her bent arm to press everything down. The bed did look freshly made but I knew it wasn’t. Plus her arm had done the same thing on all the other beds yuck!
I can so relate to your OCD tendencies as I too have them. Honestly, all these “concerns” from everyone make it very difficult to travel and enjoy your trip. Everything from rates/fees to the quality of accommodations, housekeeping, animals, food service is beyond shocking!
Everything you say is so true. They change sheets but put used comforters over the nice clean sheets! Also the sofas with fabric make me feel like germs are lurking all over them!
I agree with everything! I also despise towels, tissues etc placed right above or near the toilet. In addition if my husband is in the shower I will dry/style my hair in the room and need good lighting, an outlet and mirror. It’s rare to get all three. I’d also love more charging ports!
yes! and it makes me crazy that even in many super high end hotels they do not have a hamper for a specific place for used towels!!I mean, that seems so simple!
Cleanliness is most important. When staying in a Hotel. I feel I pay for cleanliness. Everything should be scoured to the Max! Bed and Bath linens should be changed daily and surfaces cleaned as well. Our world has to get back to being realistic. This bit about not using water because we need to save the environment etc. Not using soap and water is detrimental to our health. We need to feel we can travel safely and knowing cleanliness has been the top priority of any establishment.
And Yes, I love a light airy room as well.
I agree with all that is said about hotel room cleanliness! I go one step further and place a clean washcloth on shower floor before stepping in the shower.
Spot on. I travelled extensively for business for forty plus years and stayed in the “best” hotels. The cleanliness was very evident. In the later years, it appears the cleaning people themselves or the hotel standards or both, were compromised. Luxury became the buzz word not cleanliness.
Tina, you are spot on with your comments and list of ideal hotel room necessities. It was reassuring to me that all the items you mentioned and that I have talked about for years, are not quirky. Good to know I am not alone. There needs to also be a dedicated place for luggage to be placed in a hotel room. It drives me crazy when I see someone put their belongings (suitcases, totes, etc.) on a hotel bed, chair, sofa, etc. after those items have been casually placed on many a public surfaces enroute to the hotel. Living in a city I see how disgusting many of the public surfaces are and many people think nothing of setting their bags in these surfaces (many containing fecal bacteria, etc.) and then putting such items on a hotel bed or chair in which one sleeps or sits!! Just yucky.
You are speaking my language and nothing here feels crazy. I laughed and agreed with every point. I laughed about the pillow opening, I have not given it thought but now will! I also do not like coffee makers in rooms, and totally agree about room service too! I also wonder how long those extra blankets they keep in the closet have been sitting there (my guess is a long time). Normally the highest hotels have a much higher standard of cleanliness but not always. I love staying in a new hotel- the best!
sorry to give you something else to think about! I would rather be cold then resort to suing one of those blankets and have been known to cover up with my robe haha
I would never in a million years drink from one of the glasses they provide !!! I never walk barefooted : those flips are waiting patiently by my bed !! I step out of flip flops straight into the shower & reverse when leaving the shower. Keep my luggage zipped the entire time. Bed bugs are not discriminatory as to what hotels they “ visit “ . In fact , all my possessions are kept in my luggage . I do hang some clothes depending on my length of stay. But the only thing out of place in my room is my luggage purched on the luggage rack. I have no qualms about ironing daily. I figure the majority of people rarely iron on holiday. So the ironing board should hopefully be clean enough !! I won’t bring my own pillow as I hate the thought of it leaving my clean home to travel with it goodness knows where. I think I’m more horrified to the fact of people lugging pillows around dirty airports !
Agree, I often will throw disposable cups in my suitcase or get the from the hotel. I tend to keep my things that don’t wrinkle in my suitcase and hang everything else.
Yes! So many of these, I agree with you on. I think if I took a black light into a hotel room,I fear I would never travel again. Good idea to always bring disinfecting items with you. I always tip the cleaners, hoping they will be encouraged to clean my room extra well! I think your idea of a hard surface with a removable rug is genius! Why don’t they do that!! It would be cheaper in the long run for them too and much cleaner. This post reaffirms my own hangups so thank you.
I totally agree with you TIna! I always have wipes with me. Carpet is a no no! I would always bring a heavy towel to cover the pillows especially when my children were young. Cleanliness is of paramount importance.
Totally agree with all you stated above. My main beef is carpet in the room. Probably the most offensive thing I have seen is cleaning the glasses with a used towel. I saw this on 60 minutes years ago when hidden cameras show housekeeping simply wiping off the glass glasses with a dirty towel. I have experienced this myself and only want wrapped disposable drinking glasses in the room.
I agree 100% about everything you said, Tina. Hotel rooms, at any hotel, are unsettling to me. I just cannot sleep well until I return home to my own yummy bed.
i bring a sheet and pillowcase, usually in blue so I know its mine against the white sheets. My husband thinks I’m crazy, lol. I sanitize all remotes , doorknobs, etc. I rip the bed apart looking for any signs! I’ve read even in the finest hotels, there are cleanliness issues. And yes, I still travel!
I also watched a 60 Minutes show years ago regarding hotel cleanliness, and it was so shocking it would make anyone never want to visit a hotel again. Even the highest priced hotels were not sanitary and, yes, the bed linens were some of the most germ infested under black light, now I find it difficult to “relax” when traveling! I would love to know what percentage of their budget is spent on housekeeping, because it definitely doesn’t seem to rank high on the list, and, IMO, there is nothing else that matters once I’m checked in.
Oh how I remember that episode…it really scared me from going to a hotel for a while! Would be interesting to know what the allotment is towards housekeeping.
I just traveled to Canada. Only one hotel had a full length mirror and only one hotel room had a mirror with an outlet nearby in the room (not the bathroom). This was very inconvenient for 2 people trying to get ready at the same time. The sofa fabric was stained which was really gross to me.
I loved this post (enjoy all of your posts) but this one really resonates with me! I travel a lot for business and joke that I want to write a book on hotels when I eventually retire. I ventral approx 9-10 days out of every month so stay in A LOT of hotels and have many thoughts.
Including all my pet peeves, which you outlined many of above! You hit every nail and laughed at your room service comment about the awkward minute or so that you just stand there with a stranger in your hotel room as they set things up. I have only done it 3 times because I arrived too late, the hotel restaurants were closed and can tell you, I did not enjoy it at all. I am with you on the no food in hotel rooms. And yes to down pillows- always! Thanks for an enjoyable read.
I totally agree with all the points you made about a clean hotel room. I always wipe things down with wipes and wear socks, flip flops or slippers, so my feet don’t touch the carpet! Another one I heard is never drink out of the glasses. They probably are never cleaned and wiped only by the cleaning service. Also, never leave your toothbrush on the counter. I heard the cleaning service could use it to clean the sinks and toilets(not sure it’s true, but now that I heard this, I put it away)! I’m all for your hotel room design without any carpet and your comforter wrapped from dry cleaner! I never use the comforter because it’s probably never been cleaned!!
Yes those glasses! Never! I will often throw some plastic cups inside my luggage or request them from the hotel. That is CRAZY about the toothbrush. I normally keep mine in my little overnight bag. I will never get that visual out of my head.
First, loved reading this and I don’t feel like you’re quirky at all! Not a huge fan of hotels and so we purchased a very nice 45 ft RV to travel in and we bring our sweet dogs with us! I always have my own bedding, pillows and “stuff”. But when we do stay at hotels I always bring my slippers so I don’t have my feet on the carpet. YUK, I bring my own pillow and remove the comforter, too! I will say, I love room service coffee! Not a fan of Keurig pods or the fancier Nespresso. Rosewood Hotels always get a thumbs up from me! It is a luxury for sure.
Well that’s one great way to solve the issue, but you need to have an abundance of time and that would only apply to the U.S. but how fun to have your own traveling hotel. Agree Rosewood is great!
The first thing I do is throw the comforter on the floor. I bring my own pillow. I do not like room service. One time when we visited my son who at the time was in the Navy, there was a night we didn’t have a room for downtown Seattle. He was going on leave in a cpl days so hubby and I were going to Victoria, Canada for a few days to celebrate our anniversary. The rest of our visit with him back at Whidbey Island, we stayed in a lovely hotel. Well, the one night in the “motel” we stayed in that he booked, I slept in my clothes and didn’t take a shower. Funny cz my husband said “your mom doesn’t stay in places like this.” Honestly I’m not a prude but it was disgusting. Years later my son tells me some of the guys would get hookers in that hotel. WHAT! He didn’t know this when he booked it. We still laugh at that 20 years later.
I totally agree with everything that you’ve said. But I have a few additional quirks. I travel a lot for business and I’m always checking for bedbugs (they can even “live” at nice hotels! I would never sit on a fully upholstered couch, I never put my suitcase on the floor, and I positively hate bed runners and throw pillows (do they ever get cleaned?!) I also like a place to store my suitcase – it can be a flat topped piece of furniture or a folding luggage rack. And I need to have some sort of desk space with electrical outlets for my laptop.
SO agree about any upholstered furniture! I bet those pillows are never cleaned. Yes, never ever would i put my suitcase on my bed, a folding rack or some designated chest.
Not a fan of hotel carpeting! I need a well lit, close up mirror to put on my makeup these days. Windows that look out over the city are preferred. I love a luxury hotel experience!
Amazing! Spot on! And I thought it was ME. This post is riveting. And brings back so many hotel horrors I have encountered over the years, plus adds some new ones… I always “rearrange” my rooms, look for the dust, dirt, etc…and give the room a “once-over”…
Rule number one: never walk barefoot on the carpet! Always put out the slipper linen next to the bed. And always wash the glasses. I always had to spend the extra money to have a junior suite when I traveled with my children, so we could have room service and it would NOT be in the bedroom area. Agree: so awkward to have the wait staff deliver the food. I never let them touch it or arrange the table. And I could go on….I once watched a room maid wearing a traditional maid’s uniform, black dress, white apron and collar/cuffs, clean my bathroom in Paris. She washed the ENTIRE bathroom, which was completely tiled. Walls, ceiling, floor, etc. all washed down. And into the drain. It was immaculate and sparkling clean when she was done…and I never forgot it!….But it left me wondering after that experience how all the other hotel bathrooms I visited were cleaned…Definitely, never, ever as well…..
Agreeeee! No carpet—wood look tile is cleaner for guests and for cleaning staff. Like the comforter in a sealed bag idea…
I thought I was the only person who was so phobic re hotels but glad to see I am not alone. Although I am allergic to down so down alternative is not on my bad list.
Hopefully some hotels will read your post
First let me say I love creating a beautiful home, beautiful food, and a beautiful table. We love to host. That’s why I read this blog. I have enjoyed it for years, Tina. I have your products in my home.
My work has taken me to the developing world. If I carried these expectations I could not do my work. Recall that our skin is a BARRIER. That is its function. The towels on the floor business? Unless you have an open wound on your foot it is an absolute waste of time and, as we get older, a tripping hazard. (Also it makes the room look ridiculous..) Yes, there are bacteria all around us everywhere. The vast, vast, vast majority of them are completely harmless unless you are seriously immunocompromised—-and then you have bigger concerns if you are traveling. Seeing the world, truly experiencing other cultures—-this is one of our few hopes in our painfully divided world. If you’re paying attention, and not just going to another resort or whatever, travel changes you. Please, women, don’t let these privileged fears dictate whether or not you see the world!
I agree with you. Just stay home if you’re going to be overwhelmed thinking about cleanliness. What disease will you get walking on carpet?? The only thing I will do is wipe down the remote control.
I so agree. We shouldn’t be careless, but as a human, we have to endure certain inconveniences and germs are not always lethal. As a flight attendant for many years, I can say that I never encountered any disease from a hotel room. Some of them were truly suspect but I survived. Often, I was so very tired that I fell on the bed with no thought for anything but sleep.
You nailed it. I feel exactly the same way. I could not have written it better myself. In fact, my husband thought I wrote this. The only thing I would add is that I bring my own washcloth as I would never use the hotels. Thank you for being open and vulnerable.
I so agree with all your quirk except the pillows – I am allergic to down pillows. If I sleep on one I wake up with a red rash on my cheeks and so must put up with a down alternative. I always turns that little flap away from me though! And I agree with the rest of your assessments. We just got back from a trips to a San Francisco to visit our grands (❤️) and stayed in a decidedly not luxury hotel because it was nearby and it has gotten to the point where they no longer clean the room every day, but every other day. And they haven’t lowered the price either. I would be happy to stay in a nicer hotel if there were one, but to do that you have to go i to the city and I would rather be closer to the kids.
Hi totally get it..for someone who is allergic an alternative is needed.Funny that you have the flap hangup too. I thought I was the only one! Ridiculous to not clean every day or at least offer two price points!
I found my people. YES to all of this. I guess I am germaphobic too:) I must admit never thought about the pillow cases, but now that you mention it! And so agree about the carpeting. GROSS. Love your ideas for a perfect hotel room. I would stay there any day!
Now that Santa Barbara has closed our dept. stores to allow for low income housing ,
I have nowhere to get new pillows.
I havent refreshed since Covid !
Can you recommend a good pillow I can buy online ?
I loved this post and agree with everything. We gave up going to luxury hotels because they are the worst for cleanliness by far. If we absolutely have to travel, we choose a mid-priced chain that we have had success with; but I still check for bedbugs and wipe absolutely everything down with wipes in addition to doing all the other things the commenters list. It is exhausting to do all of this; but otherwise I just can’t go on the trip.
Thats interesting, i think there are some that have super high standards, Four Seasons, Aman, Rosewood to name a few (Ritz in Paris was amazing). Agree on the wipes.
Oh my goodness that’s so true and even harder to accept as we travel after we get older and wiser.
White bedding fresh from cleaning is a dream sometimes achieved. My trip really begins with knowing that the room is immaculate and quiet.
I thought I was the only one 😅
If I have my husband read your article he might have to say something like are you related??
I have been traveling since a very young age and now only for fun and it gets me so nervous when I choose the hotels.
Our bedroom is much nicer than many of our hotel rooms and I designed it like that and my husband is always congratulating me for this!!!
I am a germs phobic person all the time, after COVID even more!!
We should share hotel that pass the test!! Nice article we should publish it on some travel advice site!!!!!
Ha! That funny. I am that way with my bedroom as well, always want it to feel like the presidential suite, like a clean little oasis..nothing like coming home to our own room!
I have actually called hotels ahead of time and asked for an extra cleaning, and the ones I asked always obliged.Leaving a tip for the cleaning crew is another incentive (often with a little note of thanks)
Damn girl😜 I never worried if my hotel room was clean or not!!! But I’ll be honest I have wondered if the hotel washes the comforter when they wash the sheets. Probably not! I absolutely LOVE your Instagram I don’t know how you can handle your business, remodeling and family so seemingly effortless 🎉. I live in Houston Tx but spend all summer on Shelter Island. I hope one summer I’ll
Bump into you❤️
You nailed it!!! I spray…well, everything w/Lysol spray…everything. We must “step outside the room…briefly” while it works it’s magic…& we can breath again. ALWAYS do I check under the mattress…*sigh* franki
EGADS,,,, I’m so glad I’m not the only one who has issues with hotel stays. I always pack my own pillow cases. I found that the silk cases that have zipper closures are the best and fold down to almost nothing. As a medical professional I keep a stash of alcohol swabs in my carry on and more in my suitcase to sanitize every surface I can. Flip flops always! and I soak them in the sink with detergent before I pack them to leave. I always have a stash of Arm & Hammer detergent sheets and I pack a small container of dish soap in with my toiletries so that I can wash the glasses in the room before we use them.
So glad to know someone is germ phobic besides me and my mom!! My husband thinks we go to extreme to be clean. I could add other things to this list not to do in rooms. And I don’t trust room being recleaned if I’m not watching! I absolutely hate carpet and fabric upholstery in rooms.
All of the above. Watched a program about unsanitary hotel rooms—shower curtains at top of list.
We travel w/our own face cloths & towels. I always have a canister of Lysol wipes—I wipe it down We bring our own shampoos & soaps. Shower shoes—Never drink from glassware provided by hotel. I’ve heard they will possibly—(One can’t be too careful) wipe them clean w/same cloth they use in bathroom. No pillows or comforters. Store tooth brush, etc. Never leave out.
I also have had a big problem as an adult with hotel rooms. It has taken me years to overcome them. Now I just do my check around the room. Wear shoes. Have a glass of wine, relax and don’t think about it.
I agree totally with your idea of a suitable room for me.
I walked in on our housekeeper making our bed. She had put the pillowcases on all four pillows, and then laid them in a line on the dirty carpet, while she put the sheets on the bed. I went straight to management, and she lied and said that they rolled off of the sofa where she had put them. They don’t care!
Agree with it all! First thing I do upon arrival is get rid of comforter & decorative pillows and leave note not to place on bed again. Everything light & bright .
Hi Tina,
Have found my people. When we stay at hotels I take my own towels, pillow etc. Cleaning products and wipes and basically clean everything. If we stay at a holiday rental I run the dishwasher on very hot while empty then any plates, cutlery we will be using all go in. In showers at hotels I wear flip flops while in the shower. Never have comforters on me, all pulled off and bed, chairs sprayed with Glen 20. I have also been known to take my own sheets on occasion. My boss has made fun (in a nice way)of me because of my quirks, he thinks it’s hilarious the extremes I go to,glad to see I am not on my own.
I have ALWAYS had a rule when I was traveling with our children, to pour a glass of water on the bed upon arriving in our hotel room. Then I would call housekeeping and let them know the spread was wet! They would rush up with a fresh spread from the laundry. Most hotels now opt for no spreads, The blanket is covered both top and bottom in between clean sheets. Better, but just last weekend we were in Nashville for the Designer Showhouse. It was over the top, fabulous. Outstanding!! However, when we arrived and went to bed, I woke up with a huge spider bite on my leg!!! It must have been in the bed. I freaked out and changed rooms three times. From now on, in addition to wiping down every surface, like, door knobs, lite switches, toilet flush, lamp switches, remote, phone, I would suggest flipping down the bed to check for spiders. When I travel, I save an old pair of socks to wear in the room. When we leave I throw them out. I also travel with my own small can of lysol and start to use it right from the seat on the plane to the wastebaskets in the hotel room. All luggage stops in the mudroom when we get home and they get wiped down, wheels and all. Who knows what you rolled them through! I totally understand every bit of your phobias. I am right there with you
I traveled extensively for almost 30 years in my career. 40 to 50 weeks annually and ya’ll worry too much. I’ve stayed in every class and caliber of hotel. Keep your immune systems up … keep the housekeepers germs out of the room and know that the air you breathe on planes is far more germ filled than the hotel room in which you are staying. What I did do everytime if I had access to the forced air AC/heat unit was to remove and clean the screen and spray it with Lysol. that keeps the air…which carries most germs, clear AC heat source
Tina, I am a devout follower since 2012/2013! Always love your blog posts, your wonderful insights, decor style and watched your beautiful on-line store evolve over the years along with website issues, fixes, and updates using new web designers. That’s proof I am a long time follower! This may be my first time commenting. 😊 What a great post and right up my alley. Your ideal hotel room concept is ideal! I like bight and white/neutrals. I should’ve been a secret hotel guest inspector. Lol Call me crazy…. Here goes. Over the last 20 years this is my “over the top ritual” (for us to feel comfortable) when we check in to our hotel room. Especially, if we are staying at the same resort for a week or more which this comment relates to. Less is done if we travel to Europe or US and change hotels or Inns every few days. We pack a can of Lysol and container of Clorox wipes and one or two kitchen size trash bags and a few paper towels. I always have the attitude that the last person who stayed in our hotel room had the flu. Open sliders and turn on bathroom fan/ventilator. 1) Bathroom: Counter, sink and fixtures, shower floor and walls sprayed with Lysol. Toilet bowl, handle and seat also sprayed. After all is dried, I wipe everything with Clorox wipes, including bathroom floor and light fixtures. I wipe knobs and wipe out and sanitize drawers. It only takes a few minutes to do all of this. Meanwhile, in bedroom and living room, my husband wipes down door knobs, tv remotes, phones, tops of dressers, desk, coffee table and nightstand counters, slider door handles, headboard, fridge handle. My pillows are too large to pack (Duxiana) so we each pack two light blue king size pillow covers. (Blue, so we don’t forget to bring home) We never use the glasses provided or use the coffee maker. Towels on floor on each side of the bed with our slippers. We put all the used wipes in the trash bag and place in closet. And then, I repeat the bathroom the next morning. And, I always wipe the hairdryer and light fixtures, curtain pull sticks and outside of the safe. The hallway door and inside doorknobs/locks are also wiped. It takes us about 20 minutes to do all of this. I call housekeeping and tell them the comforter smells and ask for a new one in a bag. We tip everyday and write a thank you note to the housekeepers. For certain hotels, there are times we don’t use housekeeping everyday but request used towel pickup and new replacement towels. This is our ritual. Now, one day I’ll share my airplane seat ritual. As people walk by, some say, what a great idea!
Oh my word! This is me 100% in hotel rooms. Bring on the Clorox wipes immediately! One thing I haven’t really been bothered by is room service. (I love room service, although haven’t exercised that option for some time.) However, I may rethink. Thank you SO much for sharing. Consoling that others have the same concerns.

Yes agree. Thats why I would prefer to sleep without a comforter.
And Yes, I love a light airy room as well.
me too! Even if simple, just make it super clean!
Good point! I do think there are exceptions..some have very high standards but its not the majority.
Just yucky.
so agree about the suitcase! NEVER on the bed! germs are everywhere but I don’t want them in my hotel room or going home with me.
I could never travel again if a black light was involved. I like the idea of a hard surface and removable rug too.
I totally agree with you TIna! I always have wipes with me. Carpet is a no no! I would always bring a heavy towel to cover the pillows especially when my children were young. Cleanliness is of paramount importance.
So get it.
Yes on the carpet and what??? cleaning the glass with a used towel. Glad I never use those glasses!
I agree 100% about everything you said, Tina. Hotel rooms, at any hotel, are unsettling to me. I just cannot sleep well until I return home to my own yummy bed.
Agree nothing..no matter how great the hotel is like coming home to our own rooms!
i bring a sheet and pillowcase, usually in blue so I know its mine against the white sheets. My husband thinks I’m crazy, lol. I sanitize all remotes , doorknobs, etc. I rip the bed apart looking for any signs! I’ve read even in the finest hotels, there are cleanliness issues. And yes, I still travel!
Great idea about sheet an pillowcase. Sanitizing is a must!
Thats annoying and soiled furniture would have me checking out so fast! This needs a part 2.
I would love to be a contributer! Agree about room service.
Totally agree with all your comments, I appreciate it when a magnifying mirror is in the bathroom to help with putting on makeup!
Agree a big help.
I call ahead of time and ask for it to be removed entirely for my stay. That’s a funny story- I am sure not funny then:)
Yes most seem to have the mirrors now, and a pretty view is always the cherry on top.
Amazing!
Agree with everything. I also have had some incredible hotel experiences as well..this needs a part 2!
Totally agree and I also love the sealed bag idea, wish they would start that. You are not alone!
Thats funny, have to show this one to my kids and husband, they will think its funny as they have lived with this so long.
Sorry to give you something else to now think about…you can’t be too careful in my book.
Now that Santa Barbara has closed our dept. stores to allow for low income housing ,
I have nowhere to get new pillows.
I havent refreshed since Covid !
Can you recommend a good pillow I can buy online ?
Four Seasons actually sells their bedding and pillows which are amazing. I also like and own several Cuddledown down pillows.
Thanks for the recommendation on bedding and pillows. I was just about to ask. Any suggestions on mattresses? Thanks!
I read once that Diana Ross would have the room (suite) recleaned before she stayed there.
Bump into you❤️
haha…hope I didn’t give you too much to think when you check into your hotel room next time. Love Shelter Island!
Agree with all. Love your designed hotel room. Looks perfect.
I thought I was bad, I think you have me beat!
Hi Tina,
I have ALWAYS had a rule when I was traveling with our children, to pour a glass of water on the bed upon arriving in our hotel room. I am right there with you
You are absolutely spot on.
I always carry Clorox wipes for the plane and the
hotel room ….. even for the five star wonders around the world!
