Hello friends, here I am with Chapter 3 of Bluff Diaries, where I will chronicle our building journey in Palmetto Bluff. Right now everything is obviously preliminary but we are making progress. Nearly done with interior plans and working on exteriors now. I am sharing with you my various ideas of what I can see for that house in this series. Though I am sure many of my ideas will change/evolve over time, I tend to be a pretty decisive consumer. When I like something, it normally sticks:) If you missed Chapter 1 click hereand Chapter 2 here. There will be, rest assured, many more chapters to come!
Today’s chapter is on one of my favorite subjects……kitchens! I am excited about getting to plan another kitchen. I really enjoyed the process for my home here in NY and it was one room where I really was able to fulfill my wish list and it delivered. I recognize this kitchen in PB is going to be obviously smaller and much more casual, however that does not mean comprising on beauty! I see a “light and airy” approach to this house in general and the kitchen will follow suit.
My husband and I have decided we want this house to be part low country/part Hamptons..it will be a hybrid of the two. I love the look of open shelving in a kitchen but with the plans as they are shaping up, I will not have much wall space so it is probably not in the cards if I want to be practical and for the kitchen to be functional. Though we will use it part time, you always have to be mindful about down the road, if we were to sell to someone who might live there full time (and that includes us:). So though this is very early on, here are some of my ideas-
The kitchen will be about 13 x 20 which will include a center island with ample bar stool seating for at least 4, it will open onto a large great room that will be family/living/dining. Very open and inviting layout. Here are some of my ideas….
Cabinetry-
This has been a longtime fave and I could see this easily in this house-
And these are an assortment of others I like very much and have been collecting for a while-
The details-
There is a chance I will do wood floors but am not totally sold yet. Depends on what we do for the main big room, love my kitchen floor the reclaimed French limestone but its costly and not as gentle on the feet so we will either do some kind of wood or stone with area rugs. Peacock Paversare really beautiful and look like old stone, plus they are so affordable-
I would LOVE to do this Ilve stove if my budget allows, just really digging the gold/silver mix, love my Ilve now so I would do another in a heartbeat:) Isn’t this a beauty!
And really love my Shaws farmhouse sink so would do that again as well….might do a double this time
I think I am leaning towards brass in the kitchen but its not 100%…..however I really do love the look. Something like this faucet and this hardware below are an example of the vibe I hope to create….
Pulls- seeing something a bit cleaner, less fussy, oversized and more transitional along this line-
Countertops-
Countertops- I am as in love with my honed Calcutta Gold countertops today as much as the day I got them put in….hopefully we can find not crazily priced beautiful slaps to do it again in the new house. Second choice would be one of the beautiful quartzites out there, a bit more affordable and some are really quite amazing looking! You just have to be very persistent and keep looking until you find what you want…..
Seating-
Barstools- Definitely want something on the casual side…always been fond of the updated traditional bistro style bar stool
And I also like this look a lot as well….
Lighting-
I could see any of these beauties above the island which will hopefully seat 4-5 kitchen stools-
This is fun and most definitely the one room I tend to be the most excited about. You can be sure there will be many more kitchen posts to come! I love to cook and entertain so look forward to this more casual style as I think it will get used a lot. Fingers are crossed that we will sign off on the plans (both interiors and exterior) within the month and get building permits June, or July at the latest.
I am anxious to get this show on the road!! In the meantime it’s fun to do my “investigative research” 🙂 Thank you for stopping by…wishing you a wonderful day! Until next time….

Your home will be beautiful, such style you have! I’m sure that you are having fun with your new project. I love the bistro barstools and have been looking for some. Where did you find them?
My kitchen is similar to what you are doing but with dark Pine floors, which I love. ( I live on an Island off the coast of Savannah.). They are so easy to live with and so “Southern”. I chose wide planks, maghony stain and a matte gym coat sealer. Looks beautiful!
Also, I had some open shelving in the past but have since closed it in, as have all my friends here. Much more practical, used glass doors instead. With our way of life here, windows open a lot of the Spring & Fall, and folks coming and going all the time, it keeps things cleaner. (I used to feel I had to rinse off anything from open shelves before using.)
I can’t wait to watch the progress!! It’s going to be beautiful. How fun to get to do a “real” house (where you live full time) and a fun “vacation” house. You can really explore lots of design opportunities. Anxious to see the planning and the design. I know it will be lovely. Sure wish I could come to the “open house” LOL!! Blessings from Missouri!!
Just love so many of your choices. It’s exciting to see all the brass you have selected, as I love the return to the use of brass. Funny how trends recycle over time, but improve each time. I’m excited for you and am enjoying seeing the progress.
Love all the kitchen cabinets and the counter top material. I usually love white marble for kitchen counties but will have to investigate your material of choice. This is going to be a beautiful home!
I am so excited to see this home evolve. I have been to Palmetto Bluffs and it is AMAZING! I agree with Patti that it is not going so much in the casual direction. Your low-country/Hamptons feel is exactly the look I love and can’t wait to see! The stove is gorgeous but feels like a lot of upkeep for the look and feel. That looks more like your NY kitchen feel. The bar stools are fabulous. They have the perfect vibe of a beach house. Can’t wait for the next chapter!!
Love all your posts and everything looks gorgeous. Would you please share your sources for the lanterns? I have been in search of something like these!
It’s going to be beautiful! I love all your choices and those inspiration kitchens are pinned. Can you tell me where I could find the bar stools – third down?
Love to hear about your progress Tina! I was just reading about the new colors that Ilve is showing and ..wow, so pretty. My farm house sink is also a Shaw Original and I’d get another if there was a need. I share your love for Calcutta marble and it will look gorgeous in your new home. I was worried my kitchen would be too sterile looking with marble everywhere .. but I’m actually putting MORE in (around the kitchen window area). Hard wood floors are so warm and would look great with all of these other pieces. Enjoy!
I am glad you didn’t ask us to vote on the kitchen photos. I loved the first one, until I saw the second one, then I loved the second one, etc, etc. etc.
If I were doing a new home/kitchen/great room — If I had the space, I would do double islands. One for prep with a small sink, undercounter microwave, wine cooler and the other for entertaining and seating. Two slimmer islands would provide much more diversity than one large one. Looking forward to seeing more of your ideas and the building of your new vacation home.
Here I am at last, sometimes I don’t leave a comment because of the gifts you so generously offer ( so close but yet so far 🙂
I love the diary for your Palmetto Bluff home it is such an exciting time for you. Have you considered engineered wooden floor? It is wonderful for a property that has some movement, my home also. I used it on a large project recently, there are some beautiful colours.
I was delighted to see your beautiful flowers from your flower market visit last week, in my favourite colours and your pretty pillow line and silver.
I hope you are having some spring sunshine, even if it is cold. It isn’t too bad over here, I so love the Spring, it is my favourite time of year…blossom galore 🙂
oh tina. i’m not just shining you on, you are the queen of kitchen posts as far as i am concerned. i am nuts about these choices and took away all kinds of inspiration! thank you! the house is going to be incredible. 13 x 20 is about what our kitchen is now (after 30 x50 or something astronomical like that) and it feels little so i can’t wait to hear what you think. i am always available to house-sit your 2nd home btw. 🙂 peace.
Tina, this is such fun to watch the process of “Enchanted Home South” – I know it is going to be stunning! I wish I could redo my kitchen (or build a new home) – I would be signing up for e-design so fast you couldn’t see straight! Enjoy this rainy day! xoxo
Tina, so excited to follow your process of the PB project. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. Love your thinking on the kitchen.
Several have commented that it’s not going in the casual direction. From one who tends to the formal side, I see an elegant casualness in your inspiration.
Like Sally, I would also recommend considering engineered wood flooring. We used a hand scraped wide plank in varying lengths in a kitchen that’s open to a large great room that is family/dining/living. It flows beautifully through the entire area. It gets a lot of traffic with 12 grandkids who all live in town and it holds up great.
Can’t wait to see what you decide, know it will be beautiful!

It’s going to be be so amazing,Tina. Isn’t doing a beach house the most fun ever?! Happy Wednesday!
All very beautiful but not the “casual” look you had mentioned. I was excited for that!
I love the barstools also. Do you have any sources for us?

A double sink would be great with long growing season in PB.

The stove is beautiful but you need classes to learn to use it and it is really difficult to keep clean. Just sayin’

This is so exciting! I love your ideas and selections, Tina. Especially that double farm sink. Happy to be following along. Cheers
Tina, hope that you are having a good week! And hopefully doing something relaxing. Enjoy your weekend.
I love the banquette backing up to the island. What a great idea!
