Good morning friends, hope you are doing well.\u00a0 For today’s Let’s Talk, we\u2019re talking about hotels and my somewhat germ-phobic, slightly OCD tendencies when I travel. I have a feeling I\u2019m not alone here, and I\u2019m genuinely curious to see how many of you can relate. I absolutely love to travel, and that desire has never waned. But what has changed over the years is how much my admitted \u201cquirks\u201d have somewhat intensified \u2014 especially when it comes to hotel rooms. Even the nicest hotels can sometimes let me down but many have impressed me as well.\u00a0 If I could design my own hotel room, oh, I\u2019d have so many opinions.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s start with what makes up the perfect hotel room in my (admittedly picky) mind.<\/p>\n

Carpeting \u2014<\/strong>This is my nemesis in hotel rooms. Carpeting is my first anxiety trigger. I never know when it was last cleaned or what\u2019s lurking in it. When my kids were little, I used to make a towel trail from their beds to the bathroom so their feet never touched the carpet. To this day, I still put two towels by my bedside and always wear slippers at all times.<\/p>\n

Bedding Matters-<\/strong>Down pillows are non-negotiable. I cannot stand lumpy, synthetic pillows \u2014 they ruin my sleep and give me a neck ache. I also prefer a firmer mattress; soft, sink-in ones make me feel trapped.If the bed isn\u2019t made with crisp, tight corners, I immediately feel uneasy. And comforters? I usually ask that they be removed before I arrive. I\u2019ll either sleep with just clean sheets or bring my own small blanket. No printed or dark comforters for me.\u00a0 In a perfect world, there would be a light down comforter still wrapped from the dry cleaners on the bed when I arrive.<\/p>\n

Pillow Quirk<\/strong> (this is the part you may think I have lost it or I may give you something to think about next time you are in a hotel room) You know how pillowcases have that open side where the fabric is tucked in? I can\u2019t stand sleeping on that side \u2014 my brain tells me there could be germs or, heaven forbid, spiders hiding inside. I always face that side away from me toward the wall. I even bring my own pillow \u2014 a beloved down one that\u2019s been everywhere with me and folds into a ball.<\/p>\n

Room service\/good-<\/strong> OK I just know this is going to be controversial and not all will agree, again, this is just my opinion. I have a thing about food in hotel rooms. The idea of room service does not appeal to me at all. I have tried it a few times and never felt comfortable. There’s that awkward minute or when they bring the food in and you are just standing there. I don’t like the idea of food (and crumbs) in the room. I would never be able to eat a meal in my bed. Ever. I also cannot stand the way the scent of the food lingers in the room.\u00a0 Then there’s the table or tray of what’s left, having to leave it outside or have another awkward moment for them to come in and collect it. Just not my thing.<\/p>\n

Light vs. Dark Rooms<\/strong> A dark hotel room immediately makes me anxious. Recently, I stayed at a lovely hotel, but everything was chocolate brown \u2014 carpet, bedding, walls \u2014 and I just couldn\u2019t relax. A light, airy, crisp white room feels infinitely cleaner and calmer, even if it technically isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

The Germ Hotspots-<\/strong> A HUGE pet peeve of mine is the overflow holes in the bathroom sinks- YUCK! They are a breeding ground for germs and I always think a bug or spider could come walking out of them. PLEASE sinks with no overflow holes!\u00a0 I was thrilled to learn that newer sinks are being made without them!I\u2019m reluctant to touch the phone or remote (hello, sanitizing wipes!), and I would never make coffee in a hotel room.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t even get me started on shower curtains \u2014 give me glass doors only, please.\u00a0 I always have s small can of lysol and disinfectant wipes. I find often hotel room chairs and sofas to potentially be hotpots for germs as those rarely get professional cleaned (most hotels).<\/p>\n
