Good evening everyone, you know every now and then I like to change things up and post at night. I personally find evenings to be a good time (after dinner) to wind down and catch up with blogs, instagram, etc… It\u2019s time for another Let\u2019s Talk post. I have come up with so many ideas of things we could discuss, but tonight is something I\u2019m curious to know if others can relate to.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m going to make a confession \u2014 I have a lot of stuff<\/em>. A lot. I have enough clothes to last a lifetime\u2026 in quite a range of sizes, which I suspect many of you can relate to. Handbags? Lots. Shoes? Plenty. Scarves, accessories, jewelry (both fine and costume), toiletries, makeup \u2014 check, check, check.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

What I\u2019ve realized is that when it comes to skincare and makeup, I can definitely be an impulse buyer. Full disclosure \u2014 I only really started taking skincare seriously about two years ago. Even now I mostly stick to the basics, but I\u2019m very religious about doing them. I\u2019ve also been sent products to try, so I\u2019ve accumulated quite the collection.If I see something on TikTok that looks like the next greatest thing? It\u2019s usually an immediate add to cart.<\/p>\n

As a result, I have boxes and containers filled with products. The other day while trying to organize everything, it suddenly hit me just how much there was \u2014 and the reality that I will probably never use it all in my lifetime. Which brings me to something I decided to do.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I put myself on a self-imposed embargo on buying any new skincare or makeup until I make a serious dent in what I already have. So I organized everything and started actually using the products. In some cases I found I had three or four of the same type of item \u2014 like highlighters \u2014 and I told myself I cannot buy another one, no matter how good it looks, until I use what I already have.<\/p>\n

And honestly? It feels so good. One thing I discovered was quite a few tubes of mascara. The tricky part is remembering when you bought them, since mascara is one of those products you really have to keep track of. So now when I buy a new tube \u2014 for example my favorite Thrive tubing mascara \u2014 I take a Sharpie and write the date on the bottom. That way I always know what\u2019s fresh.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The ones I wasn\u2019t sure about? I tossed them. Not worth risking an eye infection. There were also a few lipsticks that had dried out, so those went too. But what I was left with was a plethora of products that I can rediscover and reinvent. I also found quite a few items that were brand new in packaging, so I\u2019ve put together a little goodie bag that I\u2019ll be giving away (details at the bottom).<\/p>\n

What surprised me most is how good it felt to put that boundary in place. Once I stopped buying and really looked at what I had, I realized there was literally nothing I needed. Everything was already there \u2014 more than enough, actually. I\u2019ve started applying this same mindset to other areas too.<\/p>\n

With clothing, we\u2019re in that transition season where winter is slowly saying goodbye. This year I was very good about buying only a few pieces. I mostly tried to recreate and reinvent outfits with what I already had. The only new things I bought were a couple of jackets (I seem to buy new ones every year) and a few sweaters.I\u2019ve also slowly started going through drawers and boxes and letting go of things I once thought I might fit into again\u2026 but realistically probably won\u2019t. Those have been set aside to give away.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I plan to do a serious purge when we move again, hopefully toward the end of the year. I\u2019m doing the same thing with shoes. Bags are a slightly different story \u2014 I really love my handbag collection, so it\u2019s very hard to part with them! But even there, a few have made it into the giveaway box. All of this has made me realize something.<\/p>\n

We live in such a consumer-driven culture that we\u2019re constantly being told about the next greatest thing. The nonstop, 24\/7 marketing machine makes it very easy to keep buying. But putting a little boundary between that impulse and what I actually need has been really refreshing.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve surprised myself. I\u2019ve come up with creative ways to use things I already own, I\u2019m rediscovering products I had forgotten about, and I\u2019m using bags and accessories that haven\u2019t seen the light of day in years. It\u2019s actually been a very positive experience.<\/p>\n

If anything, it\u2019s reminded me that we really don\u2019t need that much. It feels good to streamline and clean out. Maybe it\u2019s part of getting older and wiser, but I no longer want a counter filled with 50 different products. I\u2019d much rather have a few staples that I truly love and use.<\/p>\n
