Hello, friends! I hope you’re all having a great week so far. I’ve really been enjoying these casual chats where we talk about a little bit of everything—I love hearing your feedback and opinions. If you want to read the 2 or 3 past Let’s Talk posts I have done so far,  click here.

Sometimes, it validates how I feel about something, and other times, it opens my mind to a new perspective, which I truly appreciate. I am as I have done in previous posts, adding random pretty pictures for some visual prettiness just because it breaks up the text.

Today, I want to talk about aging and skin, have a feeling this will be a topic many of you will want to weigh in on and can resonate with.

Not that I love talking about it, but as most of you know, I turned 60 this year—a milestone that still feels a little surreal! I certainly don’t feel 60 and many say I don’t look it, so I have that in my favor:)  Best compliment was on a few occasions, people thinking I was Philip’s mom, talk about an ego boast! There’s just something about hitting a number that starts with a six that feels different from anything in the fives, and I’m still getting used to it.

I’ve always believed and preach to anyone who will listen,  that age is a state of mind. My father’s side of the family had incredible longevity—my great grandmother lived to 102, and my grandmother to 99. They were both remarkable, and I’m certainly hoping I inherited those genes:) I remember friends who are a little older than me saying that once you hit your late 50s and early 60s, you start to feel the changes. I thought that was a myth. Well, I’m here to tell you—it’s not! I’ve definitely noticed shifts, especially in my skin and sometimes achy joints when I wake up (especially if I played pickleball the day before)

I see more fine lines, and my skin is much drier—especially on my hands. I’m not thrilled about it, but I also recognize that aging is a privilege, so I won’t complain too much. I’ve always taken a natural approach—no procedures, no Botox—but for the first time, I’m considering visiting a dermatologist to see what subtle, low-key treatments might help with fine lines and elasticity. I know there is so much innovation and new technology out there, its almost overwhelming to read about the options!

I know for sure that fillers aren’t for me (or my husband—he’s not a fan either), but I’m curious about gentle treatments that enhance without altering. I am a total newbie at this game and have only had 2 facials in my entire life. The last one I reacted to so it kind of scared me away.

I’d love to hear your thoughts! Have you tried anything that made a difference? I’ve been using the A-313 cream from Paris (a cult favorite in France), after a month, the results are subtle—though maybe I just need to give it more time.

My skincare routine is very simple: I wash my face morning and night, use the cream a few times a week, apply vitamin C almost daily,  and recently started using an eye cream. I use a rich emollient from Maya Chia that I love when my skin is feeling extra dry (often). Twice a month I have stated using these peels that apparently the models from Victoria’s Secret use and must say, I love them I will be sharing both of these products on my Sunday post.

That’s it! I know I could probably be doing more, but I’ve always kept it minimal. My favorite hand cream is Gold Bond, but sometimes in the winter, even that doesn’t seem to be enough so,  if you have a great rich hand cream recommendation while we are at it, I am all ears!

My mom had beautiful skin, but she was never a sun lover like I once was. I’m lucky to have inherited her good skin, especially considering how much time I’ve spent in the sun.  I realize now that I may be late to the game but better late than never! I will be curious to see what this future dermatologist has to say, this will be only the second dermatologist appt in my life, the first was for a severe case of poison ivy. So I will be open to what is suggested….hopefully nothing involving a needle!

I have to admit—I’m a bit of a chicken when it comes to trying new treatments and am very skeptical, the kind of person who is always looking for  reasons to not do them yet I know the results even from something simple like a great facial can not only make you  look good, but feel better too.  So,  I’m keeping an open mind and would love to hear any insights you have. What’s worked for you? Any skincare must-haves or tips?

Thanks for stopping by, and wishing you all a wonderful day! OK your turn to chime in, about what works, what doesn’t , and what’s been life changing for you in the skin game. Thanks in advance, this should be a fun conversation and I cannot wait to start reading what you. have to say….

I love Camille Beckham’s Glycerin Hand Therapy! I have very dry hands and the glycerin really helps to lock in the moisture!

I just turned 69 and can’t believe how quickly time has passed. I’m often complimented on my skin which is a huge ego boost. I see my dermatologist at least yearly, mostly because I grew up in Southern California during a time when sunscreen was not the norm. I’ve had a few skin cancers removed and have been religious about using sunblock daily. I get hydrating facials every 8 weeks and just added derma planing every 6 months. In addition to face, neck, and eye creams recommended by my aesthetician I use vitamin C serum and face oil – one specific for daytime use and one for overnight. My dermatologist also recommended Retinol nightly at prescription strength. I noticed a dramatic difference in my skin tone within a month of starting it. I look forward all week to your Seven on Sunday and love seeing your periodic posts as well. Thank you for all your lovely observations and photos

Hi Tina ! So my daughter Dr. Aurel Apple will be graduating as a dermatologist this June! She has a great instagram that I would love for you to follow its doctorappleaday . She’s really inspiring!! You’re gorgeous just the way you are ! I just turned 63 and I get a lot of compliments on my skin . Using sun protection is key ! Love your new house !!

Tina, let me first recommend the only hand cream I have ever used for about 45 years: Neutrogena. I love it. It is silky smooth, a little is powerful, and there is no greasy, tacky residue left over. It just disappears into your hands and heals them. And because there is nothing left on the surface of your hands once massaged in, it’s heaven! Made originally for the hands of Norwegian fishermen. On the face frontier, I too am wondering what I might consider as some options. Meanwhile, Biotin gummies seem to be helping me with skin elasticity, hair, and nails. Worth a try. Thanks for all the beautiful photos! I am fed by them everytime you post!

I’m so happy you are bringing this topic up….. I’m quite a bit older but always looking to improve my skin

First: Make sure you see your dermatologist every year for skin cancer screening. So important! That’s also a good time to ask about new treatments, etc. I have some harmless yet unslightly moles that have developed as I age, and she sprays them with CO2 to remove them. I use Tretinoin and it has gradually improved the texture of my skin. I started with a very low dosage .02% and over the months increased as my skin tolerates it (it can be irritating if not done this way) I also love a little bottle of pure coconut oil from SheaMoisture that I use nightly (after applying Tretinoin) and anytime I feel a little dry:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0727WY21S?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1
And SUNSCREEN!!! All day, every day, rain or shine!

Love your, Let’s Talk…. I’m 72 and am fortunate to have nice skin, but live in Denver, where the dryness is so hard on skin. My dermatologist recently recommended Gold Bond for crepey skin to use along with Amlactin, which I’ve used for sometime. The results together have been visible. This is for body, not face. Amlactin was originally a prescription and not only decreases dry skin, but thickens the skin, which we all need as we age. Her colleague told me that Amlactin is often recommended for golfers as the sun can cause skin to become thinner. Last year, my dermatologist also recommended using a lower percentage Retin A, which I can only use once or twice a week, because my skin is so sensitive. Because of the sensitivity, I’ve used Dr. Haushka facial products for decades. Nothing else compares. I also use a few drops of jjojoba oil from a 4 ounce bottle containing a few drops of geranium oil, which is rather miraculous for the sensitivity.. Dr. Haushka is biodynamic. My face and neck never feel dry. I’m a believer after decades of results.

Like you, I also suffer from extremely dry cuticles and dry hands. I use L’Occitane 25% Shea butter hand cream and I also keep one in my car if needed. Also cuticle oil helps at night time. Good luck:)

Aquaphor for my dry hands. Albolene cream to take makeup off, followed by a gentle scrub, then moisturizer.

I get hydra microdermabrasion once every 6-8 weeks
I am 80 and people think I am in my 60’s!
I had surgery a few years ago with an all female surgical team.
Before I went under they asked me what I did for such great skin.
I also use sunscreen every day MDsolarsciences.com –
mineral moisture defense SPF 50
its expensive at $42.00 but they have 25% off sales
Now, what to do about thinning hair? LOL

I neglected to mention that I only use Clarins serum on my face
along with the sunscreen
no moisturizers, etc.

AMJEAN, I am 74.. About 4 years ago, most of my hair fell out. I went to the dermatologist and she prescribed Minoxidil. She had said that if it didn’t work, to pick out a wig. Well, it worked! I now have a full head of hair with only a little thinning. I will have to stay on the Minoxidil for the rest of my life. Totally worth it. People compliment me on my hair all the time. Good luck!

I am anti skin enhancement/surgery treatments as well. But… being a blue eyed blond, I squint a lot outside even with sunglasses. This has left me with what is referred to as “elevens.” The two horizontal lines that you can get between your eyebrows. These can lead to having a person look mad, even when your not. Consequently, I started Botox about 4 years ago. It is almost painless and I only need a treatment every 4 months. I do want to age gracefully. This is the one thing I will continue. Love to hear how your appointment goes!

I second the comment about seeing a board certified plastic surgeon (because my husband is one) or a board certified dermatologist. However, most of the derm treatments work on a marginal basis except for the more invasive peels. Botox in small quantities will offer a slight improvement, especially on the 11s, but filler, especially here on LI, is overused and fake. It’s almost a badge of honor in Roslyn to look that way but I find it abhorrent. You look beautiful. There is nothing “wrong” with aging. I just turned 70, have great skin although it is starting to get dry, and my husband has never operated on my face. Historically, I didn’t put a lot of credence in product but there are so many now that make a difference without procedural dermatology. To be honest, many plastic surgeons and derms on LI prey on insecurities and upsell everything but I think you are far too intelligent to buy into that agenda. Wishing you the best.

I agree with the other poster about seeing the dermatologist every year – especially if you got sun when you were younger! I love the hand cream suggestions, because mine are so dry and wrinkly all of a sudden!

I have a very basic routine for keeping my skin blemish free, hydrated and fortunately at 81 – no wrinkles! I know it’s difficult to believe, but really no wrinkles. I wash my face with Dove soap. Then I use Clinique clarifying lotion. My final step is a good moisturizer. I really look forward to your Seven on Sunday, and all the beautiful pictures and recipes. Thank you for taking the time to do this.

I am 74 and have positive results with BABOR products from Germany(have a distributor in the US) and use their BABOR Pro line…..I was introduced to these products when visiting a resort and have returned but more importantly have found an aesthetician that uses these product line also!!! A bonus! I have a facial once a month…….during the holiday season maybe every two weeks…. a splurge but have seen results!
Every two months I will have a hydra facial that many product lines in spas use their preferred brand….. love having my complexion “vacuumed” and removing all the dead skin……also, wearing a sunscreen everyday is a must……I use a tinted sunscreen by Alastin and the color blends very well with my skin tone…..I see a change in the tops of my hands and also apply sunscreen on top of a hand oil to prevent the occasional sunspots……… what a journey and have found there is a difference in all product lines……and it shows….

I love Colleen Rothschild’s products. She does offer coupons quite often. Bloggers will offer 20% off as well.

Thisis a great topic to discuss. I’m only a few years behind you 57, I am a firm believer in facials once a month. If you have sensitive skin, you can tell them that and they can use very simple. mild ingredients

per my dermatologist I also started doing micro needling- it has done wonders for my skins appearance. The only downside is you do need a few days after to recover because you are very very red.
another product I highly recommend is Kate Somerville exfoliate- it is such a great product.
I’ve never gotten fillers or Botox either, but I am actually going in next month for the first time to try Botox mostly for my laugh lines, let’s see what happens!

I am in my mid 50’s but had a lot of sun damage. I have I do dermabrasion and laser resurfacing and my skin is looking SO. much better. I am also super careful to wear high sunscreen every day and avoid sun on my face especially. I have done botox a few times and it always looks great, the person I go to does a lot of celebrities, (in California) and he has a very light hand. I always look 5 years younger when I get it done. I wish I had not spent so much time in the sun. I love the products from La Prairie also for day to day products. So much out there, you just. need to find what works.
You do NOT look 60! I though you were around 50, so whatever you are doing is working!

I just turned 70. When I was younger, I spent mega time in the sun on boats and scuba diving. I used to use every retin-a product and chemical exfoliant until I realized that my skin was perpetually irritated. Now, I keep it simple: DHC cleansing oil to remove makeup; Hibiclens face wash; a serum like Propolis Light Ampoule (or for a treat Golden Door face oil); then Cerave night repairing cream. A bit of squalane oil is helpful for very dry skin. And for daytime I never leave the house without Naturium’s Dew Glow SPF 50 moisturizer. It’s very good, doesn’t leave a whitish cast to your skin and doesn’t pill under makeup. I like Herbacin hand cream—nice light scent and no stickiness.

I’m 83 years old and have pretty good skin, very few wrinkles and credit my half Italian heritage. My grandmother lived to be 104 and had not a wrinkle on her face. Hard to believe but true. Of course she never got a sunburn or even a tan. I’ve used LaMer moisturizer since my 40s; see my dermatologist once a year or more often if I notice “something” unusual. No Botox or surgery but have had several spots burned off my face and body. Osea body oil is a new find and I love it. Very silky, absorbs completely and smells wonderful. Osea serum for my face. Use a 50 sunscreen daily (I live in Southern California) on my face and hands and no longer have brown spots on the backs as I once had. I believe in proper sleep and a healthy diet of fresh food is key to long life as well as good skin. I avoid preservatives in food, am a very moderate drinker and am fortunate to have given up smoking in my early 20s. Two days ago, I was asked if I qualified for the senior discount at the market. Made my day!

Hey Tina! I’ve been a skin nut for years!
Botox only for my 11’s- absolutely don’t do fillers! Had 1 session years ago and vowed nevvvver to do it again. I’m just turned 71 and for me the key has been to get regular guasha/ bucal facials. They are life altering. Great for lymphatic drainage- which most of under eye puffiness comes from. But more importantly- it exercises and sculpts the facial muscles. Helps with that sagging skin. The best new facial I am doing is the bucal ( I have an aesthetician who combines both in a 90 min session)- helps with everything- the lips, the jowls, the labial lines. I do a session every 3 weeks. It has changed my skin totally. Without needles and fancy gadgets. There are tons of people on Instagram that do this- so you can see what I’m talking about. I am sure someone in your area must do them. Just try 1 session. You’ll be hooked!🤗

Hi Tina, I am 77 and get many compliments about my skin. My mother also had beautiful skin, so I do think good skin is hereditary. I would you go to a cosmetic dermatologist as they know all the latest non evasive things that you can do for your skin. They also sell all medical grade products, which I have been using for many years. I also had a laser treatment done last year and I think that is the best for fine lines and any dark spots. It does hurt a little, but they put a numbing cream on your face that really helps. I grew up in Arizona, so most of my youth was spent in the sun. However, I think finding a good cosmetic dermayologist is your best bet for beautiful skin as you age.

Luckily I was blessed with my mother’s good complexion, with one exception. I have ultra sensitive skin, which limits the products I’m allowed to use. Being a former esthetician and makeup artist, I’ve had access to many top brands, but what actually works best for me is LA ROCHE-POSAY GENTLE FOAMING CLEANING OIL, Dr. Denese Advanced Firming Facial Pads, Sunday Riley C.E.O. GLOW, C.E.O. BRIGHTENING SERUM, LOVED O1 Face + Body Oil, TATCHA Kissu Lip Mask. Morning and Nighttime Routine.
Once Weekly I do a BEEKMAN 1802 Potato Peel, which is a great mask. Once Weekly I do a Dr. Denese Peel Mask. This routine keeps my skin clear and radiant.

Beekman 1802 goat milk products…Advanced Better Aging Cream, soap, body cream and lotion, body and hand wash

Maui Lavender Farm…foaming bath gel…all products are wonderful

I get facials occasionally, not as often as I’d like, I just don’t make the time but love how it makes my skin feel. I recently had a couple of dark age spots removed by my dermatologist, and will continue to do so as needed. I’ve never had a huge skin care routine as I have pretty good skin, thanks to genetics! I’m 73 so have started looking to do more for my skin than just the basics. I’ve started using ELF products (cheap but very effective) love their facial cleaning creme as well as their Holy Hydration Moisturizer. Also recently started using some Palmers facial cleaning oil and a few of their other products. All of which are extremely affordable but very effective. So many good suggestions in your comment section and I might have to adopt a few of them myself!

I just turned 60 this past year, too. It’s a tough number, even for my husband (when he turned 60, not me). I wash my face day and night with water only. I used to use Neutrogena face cream, but they stopped making it, so I moved to ROC facial cream with ‘advanced retinol’ in it. I put that on my face and neck morning and night.
I do get botox and have since I turned 40. I’m blonde and blue eyed and had wrinkles at 40. The botox is now no longer for my forehead, rather I use it to get rid of the elevens that form between my eyebrows, making me look like I’m angry. No fillers ever. I did get rid of my jowls at 58, and it’s a hereditary thing, and my mother did the same thing when she turned 60.
People say I have great skin, but the Jones Road makeup is amazing. I have a glow again! Bobbi Brown is a genius. I hope you continue these talks. I’m learning so much from reading the comments. Thank you!!!

I am 62. Have gotten Botox for 20 years to treat the deep line between my eyes. I have monthly facials that include dermaplaning and microcurrent. I try all the brands. I was a devotee of Tatcha. But I like to switch things up.

I am so dry too and 65. I started along time ago washing and slathering on the heavy cream/serum only at night. In the morning splashing face with warm water only never hot and more serum plus heavy cream/make-up only if I am to be seen that day. Wash hands in the coldest water you can stand never hot/warm then Gold Bond for severe dry skin. At night gloves and Vaseline over the Gold Bond. Sometimes gloves during the day if needed. I use retinol by Rx only and lots of water -hardly ever drink/avoid sun on my face. My Southern neighbor is going on 90. Uses egg whites and lemon juice masks plus drinks lots of lemon water/hot and cold. Never any work done and she is beautiful. Good luck!

You have beautiful skin! I love facials every month or so. They boost your spirits on the hardest of days.

Lazors, lazors, and then another Lazor. Its all about ‘exfoliation’ and then ‘moisturization’. Growing up in California I saw a lot of sun as a kid and never wore sunscreen. Once a year, I get the strongest exfoliating lazor to remove the sunspots, age, and slight wrinkles from my face, neck, decolletage, and back of hands. Minor downtime. I also get a Diamond Glow facial every other month. My daily routine is: at night, washing face with water only and the ‘makeup eraser’ cloth from Amazon, then applying either Retin A or ZO Hydroquinone Lotion and Latisse Eyelash serum (as we loose eyelash length as we get older). In the morning, I apply Mario Badescu Vitamin C serum(CVS) and tinted sunscreen. I finish up with the basic makeup as needed. 3 times a week I scrub my face and back of hands with ZO exfoliating polish…it takes YEARS off in one cleanse, especially on the hands. Seems to work as I’m 65 and looking pretty good…or so I’m told…. I also do BOTOX on the forehead. I think its great and has made such a difference. Absolutely NO FILLERS and NEVER touch the lips.

See a dermatologist annually and get sensitive skin facials quarterly; always wear a hat and long sleeves and pants to garden; and always wear sunscreen. Believe it or not, had Mohl’s surgery on nose for skin cancer and never ever want to do that again! Used Clinique products growing up and switched to Philosophy. Adore Hope Is Not Enough Facial Serum, cleanser and entire line. If I could jump in a vat of the serum I would, it’s that good! Aquaphor and Eucerin are staples. Great topic and truly appreciate all the input. I’m 65 and fair.

I purchased the Nicotinamide Riboside after you mentioned it in your column. It may be my imagination but my 69 year face looks tighter. Interested to know your results as you’ve been taking it longer…. Is it all in my mind? 😜

I go for facials a couple times a year…..I’d love to do them more! My gal told me the best thing you can do is to do a light scrub exfoliant once a week which I do. I love the Laneige lip mask that I use nightly and I do believe it has helped with those wrinkles that come around the lips. I use Lancomb serum nightly and moisturize morning and night. Drink your water to hydrate from within. I think the best beauty treatment is to seek inner happiness and peace….it shows on your face! Accept aging gracefully. I’m 75.

I have been using Sisley Products for years. From what I read, it’s very important to use serums – they are supposed to be more important than anything. Due to the very cold weather and spending time in dry heat I have switched to the Extra Rich Sisley Cream and the Night Time Supreme cream over my serums. I also have been using the Sisley Sleeping Mask several nights, which really helps with fine lines overnight.
