Good evening everyone, you know every now and then I like to change things up and post at night. I personally find evenings to be a good time (after dinner) to wind down and catch up with blogs, instagram, etc… It’s time for another Let’s Talk post. I have come up with so many ideas of things we could discuss, but tonight is something I’m curious to know if others can relate to.

I’m going to make a confession — I have a lot of stuff. A lot. I have enough clothes to last a lifetime… in quite a range of sizes, which I suspect many of you can relate to. Handbags? Lots. Shoes? Plenty. Scarves, accessories, jewelry (both fine and costume), toiletries, makeup — check, check, check.

What I’ve realized is that when it comes to skincare and makeup, I can definitely be an impulse buyer. Full disclosure — I only really started taking skincare seriously about two years ago. Even now I mostly stick to the basics, but I’m very religious about doing them. I’ve also been sent products to try, so I’ve accumulated quite the collection. If I see something on TikTok that looks like the next greatest thing? It’s usually an immediate add to cart.

As a result, I have boxes and containers filled with products. The other day while trying to organize everything, it suddenly hit me just how much there was — and the reality that I will probably never use it all in my lifetime. Which brings me to something I decided to do.

I put myself on a self-imposed embargo on buying any new skincare or makeup until I make a serious dent in what I already have. So I organized everything and started actually using the products. In some cases I found I had three or four of the same type of item — like highlighters — and I told myself I cannot buy another one, no matter how good it looks, until I use what I already have.

And honestly? It feels so good. One thing I discovered was quite a few tubes of mascara. The tricky part is remembering when you bought them, since mascara is one of those products you really have to keep track of. So now when I buy a new tube — for example my favorite Thrive tubing mascara — I take a Sharpie and write the date on the bottom. That way I always know what’s fresh.

The ones I wasn’t sure about? I tossed them. Not worth risking an eye infection. There were also a few lipsticks that had dried out, so those went too. But what I was left with was a plethora of products that I can rediscover and reinvent. I also found quite a few items that were brand new in packaging, so I’ve put together a little goodie bag that I’ll be giving away (details at the bottom).

What surprised me most is how good it felt to put that boundary in place. Once I stopped buying and really looked at what I had, I realized there was literally nothing I needed. Everything was already there — more than enough, actually. I’ve started applying this same mindset to other areas too.

With clothing, we’re in that transition season where winter is slowly saying goodbye. This year I was very good about buying only a few pieces. I mostly tried to recreate and reinvent outfits with what I already had. The only new things I bought were a couple of jackets (I seem to buy new ones every year) and a few sweaters.I’ve also slowly started going through drawers and boxes and letting go of things I once thought I might fit into again… but realistically probably won’t. Those have been set aside to give away.

I plan to do a serious purge when we move again, hopefully toward the end of the year. I’m doing the same thing with shoes. Bags are a slightly different story — I really love my handbag collection, so it’s very hard to part with them! But even there, a few have made it into the giveaway box. All of this has made me realize something.

We live in such a consumer-driven culture that we’re constantly being told about the next greatest thing. The nonstop, 24/7 marketing machine makes it very easy to keep buying. But putting a little boundary between that impulse and what I actually need has been really refreshing.

I’ve surprised myself. I’ve come up with creative ways to use things I already own, I’m rediscovering products I had forgotten about, and I’m using bags and accessories that haven’t seen the light of day in years. It’s actually been a very positive experience.

If anything, it’s reminded me that we really don’t need that much. It feels good to streamline and clean out. Maybe it’s part of getting older and wiser, but I no longer want a counter filled with 50 different products. I’d much rather have a few staples that I truly love and use.

I have OFTEN told people that my “sin” is owning too many shoes – LOL – and I definitely need to add Blue/White pieces. Anywhoo – I agree with boundaries and organizing. Am attempting to accomplish BOTH !

I’m going through the same thing!!! I love to buy skin care! Well, and new shampoos. And clothes….I have put myself on an embargo!!!! I’m trying to be good, and my counter is slimming down!

I find decluttering and organizing is like Christmas morning. I find things I had totally forgotten about! 😊

There is something about new skin care items that is exciting and gives us hope that maybe this one product will be the one greatest thing. I find once the newness wears off, I go back to using what is known and comfortable. I think setting limits on new products until the old is used up or thrown away is prudent and wise, though hard to do.

I recently did the same with skin care products after finding baskets of unopened serums, moisturizers & magic potions. I shall not buy ONE more thing until they are all gone. They might actually outlive me!

When I purge, I offer good stuff (price tags on or worn once) to family. It’s simply sharing what I no longer need with those I love. Other pieces go to a local shelter.

Yes! I can totally relate! It is so easy to put something in your cart and purchase. I KNOW if I had to actually drive to a store to physically make a purchase I would have a lot less things! I love your idea about writing the date on products so you really know their age. I have so many nail polishes! I think because they are small and not super pricey it’s easy to get a collection. I do take my polish to the nail salon. Thank you for sharing. It’s nice to know there are others out there with a love of beauty products!

Just love your truth, always willing to be vulnerable and honest and most of all include us and share ❤️

It is hard to sort out what should find a new life and what is truly dear as to handbags.
I just wanted to share that the goodies that arrived in my giveaway made for the perfect day. Such a treasure trove of superb items. Many thanks.

Yes!!!! Me too! I became a bit unsatisfied with more recent skin care regimen so I’m using products that I used to love but switched because of the next new best thing. I’m happy to be back using my tried and true with a few additions here and there. I’m also trying to use up the free travel size products that come with a purchase. I get roped into that so easily and was embarrassed by how many I have! We’re in the process of moving so I’m trying to let go of some clothes especially since I’ve lost weight however I hesitate to get rid of a lot as my weight tends to fluctuate. I took a look at my shoes too and purged some with a higher heel or thin heel as the days of comfortably wearing them are well behind me! Thanks for another great Let’s Talk post!

We moved to the UK 4 years ago so a major purge was mandatory. I felt so free and literally lighter without the weight of all those possessions! It also made me shop and purchase very mindfully once we settled and bought our house. I now have far fewer things, but they are things that I love and treasure.

Purging feels really good. The Food Pantry in my Community will take new items such as those you describe. I do not know what is in your community but it might be worth to check it out. It is so very much appreciated. Any feminine items, incontinent supplies, toothbrushes, tooth paste, hotel’s sample toiletries and so on are not what is thought of as items for food pantry.

Hard to comment on this since I’m tempted to shop every time I read your blog!!
I try to stick to the philosophy of “buy one, give one away”!

I relate to having to much & too many— fill in the blanks. It comes from the excitement of trying something new, different, and promising to make a difference. A few do but the vast majority doesn’t. I think your moratorium on new stuff before you use up what you already have is a really worthy goal to set for ourselves.

SO relatable. I too, have TOO MUCH. We are moving to Boston in Sept. so my big goal is to spend the next few months doing a major purge. With clothes, shoes, accessories, all my kids stuff, books, you name it. We are going from living in a fairly large home to a 3 bdrm apt in the heart of Beacon Hill. Very excited but recognize we will be for the first time, living in a much smaller space which in a way will be great because it will force us to really streamline our lives. Good for you for recognizing its time to purge and how generous to share the “extras”!

I find myself the older I get cleaning out every season. It really does feel good. I feel much more organized and know what I have. Thanks Tina for reminding me of this.

My new resolution but buy any new clothes . Tempted oh yes, I saw a cute summer dress put it in the cart. Then I rechecked my closet. I discovered some “I forgot I haves”. Doubt I push place order.

I can relate. I’m always putting stuff in my cart thinking I’ve discovered the best of the best. Clearly it’s not the case or I would have stopped ordering new stuff! Your skin looks lovely, so clearly you’ve found what works for you!

We should all be challenged to clear out some of our drawers. I think we all would be surprised how much of something we have stashed for “someday.” Thanks for the inspiration!

I totally relate. Like you, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to realize I have everything I need.

I’m turning 52 this year and have been blessed with more than enough of beautiful things. However, it’s always tempting to purchase what’s new and what’s out there that you may not have. I have had to stop myself and say to myself. “Ruth, you already have a lot of stuff! Shop from your own home!” Although, I do still pick up here and there but I purpose to move decor around, change tabletops with different vignettes, move mirrors, art to different walls and you know what! It feels new and loved all over again. 😉

I’ve done the same thing. Using many things that I have and not automatically buying new. Also have gone through makeup, clothes, shoes, scarves, gloves and shawls. If I haven’t worn or used the items in the last two years I donate or give to my niece. Handbags are next but that’s the hardest for me. I change my bag almost daily depending on what I’m wearing and where I’m going. Still some can go and my niece is anxiously waiting for the castoffs! It feels so good to lighten the load!!

I have also started the same process of not letting myself buy new things until my current product or clothing item needs to be replaced. It isn’t easy but does make you feel justified , intentional and less guilty when you do spend!

I did a deep closet purge this past year. Like you I discovered things and started using them again. It was easier than I thought. My giveaway pile was larger than I anticipated. But when it was all done I love my loser mow.

Tina, I recently started doing the exact same thing! I purged my old skincare products (who knew I had so many that had expired!) and organized what I have. The before/after pictures in the ads are so convincing. Yet when I buy it, the miracle never happens for me. I’ve had facials and they all recommend something different. How does one find the facial products that work best? For now, I am using the ones that make me feel good. I have also put a limit on the clothing I buy. Instead of the impulse buy, I put it in my cart and revisit it a week later. Do I still love it? Do I need it? Honestly, how many black sweaters does a girl need? If I decide to buy an item, then I try to donate an item from my closet. You are so right, we are fortunate to have more than enough. Now, buying for my grandchildren is a totally different story!.

Years ago I remember Oprah went through the same thing. I purged also. It was very freeing and made me realize that I was an impulse buyer. Of course as soon as the Neiman’s shoe sale came along I was tempted and so much for purging!

I’m guilty of impulse shopping too, but trying to reform. I try to purge my closet about twice a year, and always discover a piece or two that I had completely forgotten about, so It “feels” like I just purchased it!!! Win Win!!!

I get the accumulation of skin care stuff! But it’s so much fun! I say I’m going to stop buying but then I see something I really “need”

I thought agree with you! You have inspired me to go through all my makeup including samples! Why do I feel I need to save everything for someday not taking into account what I already have! Going to start purging tonight!

I’m 100%with you on this one! I’ve purged a lot of makeup recently, and it felt good. I know I’ll get to the clothes soon. I know it’s hard to let some things go, so good luck!

I am always looking for the latest “new” product to make me look younger. I have tried so many different ones to no avail. I have purged quite a few products. When online shopping I put a few clothing items in my cart–after a few days I revisit my cart and realize I don’t really need them. I know I will never look like the 5’10, 100 pound model!!!!
Love your “Let’s Talk” posts!

Our landfills can no longer handle the amount of “stuff” we throw away because of lack of use. So glad you are leaning toward sustainability and can use your platform to influence others. I keep clothes season after season and do what you did this year–try to re=imagine them by adding a scarf or a flat instead of a bootie. There are so many ways we can do this.
Carry on!

Tina – Great column on paying it forward and organizing your life! I have been using good beauty aide samples all fall and winter as I accumulated the last three years a ton of samples! So I have saved space and cash🤩🥂🥳it feels so great. I have also consigned clothing and shoes and have donated items to my church thrift shop, I do not buy many hand bag’s and I power wear my everyday shoes and do not buy near as many formal or dressy shoes as I did 20 years ago. My social life has changed and evolved into a new stage. I love spending time at “Home Sweet Home”and love to now and then buy from your lovely on/line shop some nice updates for my Sorority House Apartment in the home! I always have a buyer for my unique furnishings and I pass on to my young Niece and Nephew and if they pass then I’ll snap pics and check in with my friend groups and see if anyone is interest and that allows me to pass items forward🥂🍾I like you, Tina, have a goal of really cleaning out closets cabinets and my storage unit! In 2026🙋🏻‍♀️🤩🥳

I collect hair products! Sprays for heat protection, serums and oils to give shine. Curl enhancer foam and straightener! Many curling irons, round brushes, and even hot rollers! My moods change, my hairstyles change, but I never throw out items from my collection…just in case I decide to change my hairstyle!

I admit to diving deep into ads on social media that promote better skin for mature woman. I also did not get serious about following a skin care regimen until reaching 60. I am now inspired by your advice to use the products I currently have before going down the rabbit hole of purchasing more. Great advice.

Shopping in our own wardrobe often offers the most wonderful but forgotten special items of clothing and accessories.

Wow! This is a post that initiated great responses. I have always loved shopping. Decorating my home, putting special personal touches in rooms has always enlivened my soul. Many times I had to be creative since my tastes and pocketbook did not always align!! The challenge did not intimidate me. Now as time has gone on ,I am fortunate to be able to afford much more. I do splurge every now and again however the satisfaction is not as sweet as it used to be. More is not necessarily better and I appreciate watching my children enjoy some of their favorite things that I can surprise them with. That consumption gives me joy.

I went through this when we downsized 6 years ago. Could feel the house breathe a sigh of relief with every trip to Goodwill. Have been trying to be very mindful of what I buy these days. However, I am SO tempted to buy more of your bracelets. Really like them (even if they did go on sale after paying full price). Will try to resist!

I go through the same thing every now and then. I did not buy one piece of new clothing this winter and I made it through the season just fine!

Cosmetics have never been my problem but clothes, shoes, and house and garden is a very big problem with me. I have given so much away of all this and said no more buying…. I don’t need it….. AND….. I go back buying again!

Dear Tina,

Thanks for your blog, I have really enjoyed it through the years. I enjoyed your cosmetic update today. Most of all I enjoy seeing your products all around my home!!

I so desperately need to purge my cosmetics and clothes! Maybe this will get me moving.

I agree Tina ,we only have one face so there no use buying or stockpiling to much as you said it goes out of date , I would rather buy small amounts of products and keep it fresh”,
Hazel

The simplicity of less feels an awful lot like freedom. And like loosing a few unnecessary pounds! Such a good reminder.

I can relate to the excess in skincare products! I am giving myself a pause on buying any new products as well. My make up countertop is full of bottles and tubes of skincare that are barely used. Thank you for addressing this issue. Obviously, I’m not the only one dealing with this. Glad to know it’s not just me.

OMG, I was just thinking how many accessories, pillows, floral arrangements, etc. As I was in the process of still buying more spring things. And if I like something I buy 2 just in case I can’t buy it next time I want to get another. Don’t even get me started with candles! I did purge my makeup last year and was shocked with the multiples!

I can totally relate! I’ve strived to be more mindful of what I truly need…no matter what the category!

I have only ever used drugstore products. Is there a product that really helps with skin and aging… please share ladies. I’m 70 and the mirror is not my friend these days! Ha

I hope I win the skincare and makeup items because I am almost out of everything. I love all your new items for the home and your jewelry line.

After cleaning out my parent’s house of 40 years, I swore I would not do that to my children!

I totally agree. Less is more is my mantra lately!! I do admit when you post about a great product I immediately go buy it and you have not steered me wrong

After retiring, it was easier to purge some clothes but still difficult to part with my handbags and shoes.

I can’t believe how so alike some of us are. I just recently went through some closets ( I have 3 houses ) and began a huge undertaking of less is best. It is so funny and good to know so many other women and yourself feel this way. It is so refreshing both to have like minds and to actually do the clearing out.
Some of my clothes are really beautiful and expensive and I find I don’t feel comfortable just giving them away. They are in Excellent condition since they are expensive and I hate to just go to a consignment shop. It really bothers me. Do any of you ladies have any suggestions on where I can sell or give away really good clothes.
Thanks for sharing …as they say “great minds think alike”!!!!! It makes me feel part of a sisterhood!!!

What a lovely post. I too suffer from want rather than need syndrome. I just hit 70 – ACK!!! – and realized that I can, and should, finally part with my “corporate” wardrobe. I’m never going to be behind a desk in an office again and the clothes, shoes, and accessories I wore in that life no longer are needed, by me anyway. I found a wonderful second hand shop that specializes in clothing for women just starting out in their careers who maybe can’t afford the beautiful things I used to wear to the office. It felt so good to “gift” part of my wardrobe to help other women. Love your posts and look forward to seeing them in my inbox.

So relate-able! Purging feels like taking a shower, invigorating and
re-newing, and feeling so fresh afterwards!

I can relate! Everytime I think about buying a new treasure I have to remember that the goal is to get rid of excess items. Sometimes we all need to try a new makeup or outfit. I recently went through my closet and got rid of 6 bags of clothes. Time to refresh. Always nice to read your thoughts on lifes moments. I am sure your Mom also had many beautiful items that you have added to your home.

A couple of years ago we were moving and I realized I had lots of stuff that did not need to go with me. My husband did the same thing. So we laid everything out in our dining room on the table, on the buffet and another counter and invited our friends and family to look them over and take what they wanted. We did it every weekend for about three weeks. It was fantastic because they were happy and every once in a while we get to see things again. It was mostly jewelry, watches, purses, and then some interesting knick knacks we had collected over time. It felt really great and now the things we have are the things that are truly the most important to us.

Going thru all my clothes and trying to be realistic about what I’ll really wear again. And always getting rid of one thing when I buy something new, so I have a hanger to use. 😀

What an enlightening post! I took an inventory of all my new beauty products and I was overwhelmed by the amount I had accumulated. I have decided that any brand I no longer use, I’m going to give away. Plus, I’m not going to buy anything more until my stockpile is eliminated. Thank you for helping me see the light!

I have done the same, purging and discarding items that have outlived their dates etc . It’s amazing what we actually accumulate over Time, it feels freeing so I’m right there with you Tina!! Spring is a great time to renew, reflect and rid some of the old! Btw jewelry collection is simply beautiful!

Tina, I can relate to all you said. We are redoing our master bathroom and closet so this last week I’ve been going through my clothes, shoes, jewelry and purses which I haven’t done for too many years. If I haven’t worn it or used it in the last year, out it went. I’m donating my things to Am Vets in remembrance of my brother, a Vietnam vet who passed away last year.

We must all be in the same place. I told my daughter just this week that I’m doing the same thing. I have enough wrapping paper (from Enchanted Home, of course) to last me through the next 2-3 Christmases and I plan to use it before ordering more. I cleaned out one of my closets over the past weekend and now have multiple bags to donate. I found myself opening that closet door a couple of times when I would walk past that bedroom just to see how clean and organized it was!

I can’t pass the shoe dept w/o looking for a cute comfy pair… I pledged to not buy another pair for at least 6 months!

We forget how old make up and old skincare gets. Really, when a new season begins, “out with the old and in with the new ” (a few fresh items) is the best routine! I always need to clean out the area too! My makeup drawer (with compartments) gets dirty so fast. When I am able to clean out and wash the drawer , it feels so good!
D

Oh my! How your post resonated with me!!! motivated me to do the very same thing — TODAY. My goodness, THANK YOU!!!

Once I retired from the business world to take care of our parents, I let go of 3/4 of my wardrobe, suits, blazers, dresses, dress slacks and formal attire…out it went. I transitioned to a year-round wardrobe, purging all woolen items too. Since that time, I purge every six months whether I’ve worn it or not. The “freeing” feeling is quite liberating. Now only, if I can get the husband to do the same?! Haha!

Welcome to the realization of getting older. Priorities shift and you make more real time for family and special moments. I try to rotate several of my favorite classic pieces to wear. No more buying bulk loads of clothes. I sometimes even keep a diary of what I wear to which event so I don’t repeat with the same people.
As far as makeup and cosmetics, I treat myself to what really works. I stick to a routine. If it isn’t working I throw it out. That way, my vanity isn’t overloaded with items I don’t or won’t use. Hope this helps!

Except for jewelry…I have jewelry that I have had for many years. Classic pieces that have seemed to fade out of style, and then they are back in vogue again! I loved them when I purchased those pieces, and I still love them! I can part with shoes, apparel, and purses, but never my jewelry. And guess what?! I’m waiting for two pieces I just ordered from EH! Can’t wait!

Tina, this is a great, interesting post!

I try to buy skin care products from the same brand, as I feel they work better. However, I have been there trying the latest and greatest for certain areas of my face. Sometimes I feel they work, and others not so much. I love makeup products as well, and like you and many others, the mascara is the one thing that needs replacing often, Thank you talking about this!

I totally agree! We get sucked in by social media, tv and magazines to keep buying the next best thing. Working your way through what you’ve got is a great idea!

As I’ve gotten older my desire to shop and buy has dwindled. Also when we moved a few years ago I really began sorting through many categories and giving things away. Nothing like a move to motivate!

I love skincare and am always purchasing a new serum or eye cream. I too reorganized recently and found several unopened products. Vowing not to purchase more until I have used these (or found good homes for them).
