Good morning! Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend. The season of alfresco dining and outdoor living is upon us. One thing I get asked about all the time is how to make smaller spaces feel beautiful, elevated, and inviting. And honestly, I truly believe small spaces can sometimes feel even more special than large ones. I learned this early when we lived in a small 1 bdrm appt in NYC, it was small but mighty:) Often smaller spaces are cozier, more intimate, easier to personalize, and when thoughtfully layered, they create such an incredibly warm and welcoming atmosphere.
I partnered with Wayfair to bring that idea to life. This petite patio had room for just a 5×7 rug and a small table with four chairs, proving that you absolutely do not need a huge footprint to create a space filled with personality and style. A wide beautiful umbrella is a must.
The gorgeous herringbone outdoor rug(so incredible reasonable) was the perfect starting point and immediately set the tone for the entire space. These fabulous bistro chairsare not only super stylish but incredibly comfortable too! It gives a little touch of French flavor to the setting…..
Then came my favorite part… layering in all the finishing touches. Lots of blue and white, beautiful wicker textures, fresh greenery, and those little decorative details that instantly make a space feel collected, lived in, and inviting.
What I especially love is how a smaller patio naturally encourages conversation and connection. It feels intimate in the very best way — the kind of spot where morning coffee somehow turns into lunch, or where an evening cocktail stretches long past sunset.
Love wicker pieces set up for a bar, it combines sophistication with a stylish casualness.
And these lightweight fiberglass plantersare incredible! Light enough to move around and change with seasonal plantings…and under $90!
Proof that you truly do not need sprawling square footage to create a beautiful outdoor moment. Sometimes the smallest spaces end up having the most charm of all.
One lucky winner will win a service for four of our pagoda dinner plates, salad plates and a serving platter! Just leave a comment on this post telling me what you love most about creating intimate small spaces and I will announce a winner by Friday.
Thanks for stopping in. Wishing everyone a wonderful day and smooth start to your week! Until next time….
I so enjoy creating a small space for dining outdoors in the warm months. I find I host a few times a week now with having a small space instead of creating lunches or dinners for a crowd. So much easier to put together a menu for a small group than all the planning it takes for a large group. These small dinners are less formal and conversation is easy.
We just created a small patio with a round table just for 4 people! We have larger groups a couple of times a year, but we have another couple all the time so we wanted a place that felt like it was just for that purpose and it is great – intimate and fun to decorate.
I am about to begin the final downsize of my life. Excited but I love my possessions and the memories therein. Once you hit a certain age….less, is indeed more!
Who, as a child, didn’t love ”hiding out” in a secret (to them) place!? We still need those intimate outdoor spaces we can make beautiful and “hide out “ with special friends! Love this!!!
I love how small, beautifully decorated spaces foster close friendships one or two people at a time, with even more possibilities of repeating the whole process again and again.
The kids are all gone, the pets they left behind – a Westie named Benji, a female orange tiger cat, and a Maine Coone tomcat – have lingered until the Maine Coone was laid in the field next to his lifelong buddies. The 5500 square foot neo classical home is about to be exchanged for a 1500 ranch style on an acre right outside the city. Smaller spaces will be easier to maintain and we will be exchanging those large garden parties for smaller intimate get togethers with just a couple of friends here and there. Looking forward to slowing down on the upkeep, and renewing the passports! (We’ll keep a room handy for a grandbaby or two.)
We have a small patio and nothing makes me happier than potting and placing hydrangeas and boxwoods there every spring! In the fall, I relocate them to the yard. It’s a win-win!
What a beautiful and charming patio area. Yes, not all of us have a large area to entertain in. Our covered back porch has a green wicker love seat and chair. I have urns filled with ferns and a charming white bistro table and chairs. Love sitting out there on sunny and rainy days. My husband installed a rain chain a few years ago and I love seeing the water drip down on rainy days.
Small spaces can be like a wonderful surprise. You come upon them in a house or outdoor area and if they are well curated, they can really create a lot of “Wow” factor. You don’t need a lot of pieces to create a cozy and intimate look in a small space and that is what is great. You can create an area that is memorable that people will gravitate to with just the right pieces but that is also the challenge. We have a library/tv room in our new house that only seats two. My husband sometime laments that he wished he had made it bigger but I am glad he didn’t because if he had, it wouldn’t have been so cozy. A majority of the guests to our home, say it is their favorite room in the house.
Such a pretty patio. I agree small spaces can often be easier to do, and feel so cozy and intimate. I live in an apt. and have a large balcony which I tweak all the time. Love those chairs and of course all the blue and white.
That patio looks fabulous. I love the neutral furnishings and umbrella against the red brick. Love the plants. This would be a great spot for potted herbs , too!
Small, cozy spaces that remind me of the stories of secret gardens are the best. I have sculptured fig on three walls and a small herb garden surrounded by rose bushes and pots of plants. The huge mesquite and the large acacia keep everything shaded. The roses do fine as they are positioned to get enough sun. The teak table for 6 is under the roof line. Summer is upon us in sunny Arizona.
Love everything about your small space idea. It is perfect for a gathering of friends who like to visit, talking enjoy the company! I can also see the table as an outdoor Mahjong game. The dishes are lovely and fresh for summer dining. Thank you for the opportunity to enter the giveaway.
Gorgeous. I got a few ideas here. Love the look of blue/white with wicker. Can the rug be left out in all weather (rain, etc…) last one I bought did not last (from another company). Love the herringbone pattern.
I’ve often used the word vignette when planning a space. It’s not always about square footage, but more about how one utilizes the space. I like to design a room with thoughtful vignettes that are a delight to the senses. They becken the visitor to enter and stay for a while, as they explore each detail that has been chosen and placed with intention. Whether a cozy nook for reading or a space for an intimate dinner for 4, well chosen furnishings and accessories with scale in mind, can make all the difference when designing smaller spaces.
We recently downsized and have a L shaped courtyard. I’ve been struggling on how to make it cozy and functional so your post is helpful. Everything you linked is so pretty and would make it look pretty. Textures and layers add a lot to a small outdoor space
I much prefer small spaces to larger ones. Conversations are more intimate and a smaller house feels cozier. I have lived in my home for 42 years. I can afford much more and have looked at moving several times, but I always came home loving it even more. I have done renovations over the years and it’s perfect for my family
I have transitioned from a larger size patio to a smaller size area. I find the smaller size can be just as inviting with great accessories , and proportioned furniture!
I enjoy entertaining on my small patio, it is my happy place. Having friends and family over to enjoy a tasteful lunch or dinner together makes life so much better. My table with its blue and white decor is very inviting and I do get compliments on my dinnerware and the accessories that I use.
I have a small and shady garden patio that I love to fill with lots of potted fuschsias and hydrangeas. This charming bistro dining set is the perfect foil for all the greenery and blue and white decor. Love it!
Small enclosed spaces are so much easier to decorate. One conversation area and no need to figure out traffic patterns. I love the use on wicker in your space design. It warms it up.
Sharing intimate spaces invite conversation and connection with the people we hold dear. Beautiful dinnerware is part of the experience of gathering, creating memories and shared meals.
There is a serenity in a small outdoor space…conversation is more intimate and meaningful and when the area has a beautiful table setting and lovely accents—it makes it a celebration for two or four.
Hi! Since I’m from Charleston, I love small spaces. Around here, we have mastered intimacy in the garden with lovely vignettes with small tables, benches, and the occasional lounge chair. Coupled with pots of flowers and boxwood, what’s not to love!
I think the best part of a small (beautiful!) dining space is the opportunity for everyone to easily converse and interact. At a larger table, it can be hard for everyone to interact with all the guests.
I love that just one or two special pieces can have a big impact in a small space. It can be as simple as a pretty throw pillow on a sofa or a colorful bouquet of flowers on a table!

What a charming patio! I would love to sip my morning cup of tea right there.
There’s nothing like casual dining next to the pool under the live oaks with a gentle breeze and listening to the birds singing their summer songs🐦⬛
Sharing intimate spaces invite conversation and connection with the people we hold dear. Beautiful dinnerware is part of the experience of gathering, creating memories and shared meals.
