Good evening, I hope this finds you doing well. Well, it’s that time of year—that time when we start transitioning from our soft cottons and linens into clothes with a little more substance, and of course, those layering pieces. Lately, I’ve even found myself wearing a sweater here and there, and on a couple of evenings I actually grabbed a light jacket before heading out. I absolutely love fall beyond words and embrace everything about it, so this is definitely my kind of season!
I’ve also been working on a really massive closet clean-out and finally parting ways with things that, no matter how beautiful I think they are, I know I’m simply never going to wear. Sometimes it’s because of the size, but more often it’s because I’ve realized the style just feels too young for me now.
Unlike summer, I tend to approach fall and winter dressing with more of a “uniform” mentality. When I find a pair of pants I love, I’ll happily buy them in two or three colors. I live for cashmere sweaters and cardigans, and I love how polished a simple blouse can look paired with a beautiful scarf or cardigan. I’ve definitely come to think of my wardrobe as more of a capsule wardrobe rather than just buying random things here and there. Almost always wear a high necked T shirt under a sweater (also add extra layer).
Give me a great sweater, scarves for layering, a great fitting pair of pants, a crisp blouse, a cute jacket and my favorite loafers and I am good to go!
I naturally gravitate toward neutrals and solid colors—oatmeal, camel, brown, black, gray, ivory and navy. And remember, I live in New York, so these colors work especially well here!
As I was cleaning everything out, I started noticing a few definite holes in my wardrobe. I needed some fresh sweaters, a few new pairs of pants, some good T-shirts and those easy basics that you can mix and match a hundred different ways. I ended up finding just about everything I needed at Quince, which has become such a fantastic source for incredibly well-priced basics. I have to say, every time I order something from them, the quality seems to surpass my expectations.
I’m also featuring two jackets that I already own and absolutely love. They’re the kind of pieces that can easily go the distance from day to night and instantly make a simple outfit feel pulled together. And never, ever underestimate the power of a great scarf!
So I put together what I think is a pretty ideal capsule wardrobe to take you from these early days of fall right into winter—easy, classic, polished pieces that work beautifully together and can be worn over and over again.
So that’s my idea for a simple basic transitional weather capsule wardrobe. How about you? Let me know what you think! And I’m curious—how do you approach fall and winter dressing? Are you a capsule wardrobe person too, or do you like to change things up all season long?
Wishing you a fabulous day, until next time….
